Help us fund Turtle Conservation!
Sea turtles are facing the increasing threat of extinction, part of the reason is due to the poaching of turtle eggs; in Malaysia, it is believed that the eggs have medicinal and aphrodisiac uses and poachers will dig up turtle nests to harvest the eggs.
Unfortunately, due to budget constraints, some turtle conservation activities had to be cut back. One of the efforts affected is the beach patrolling activity. Without the necessary funds, patrolling will not be able to continue for the final three months of the nesting season from July to September.
We hope to be able to assist the local in the funding for the beach patrolling as well as the maintenance and continuation of the hatchery effort.
Only one in about a thousand turtle hatchlings make it into adulthood. Without such efforts, the odds of survival for the turtles will drastically be reduced.
We are a team of youths in the Project Orion Team working together with Pengusaha Wanita Setiu (PEWANIS) as well as the World Wide Fund for Nature - Malaysia (WWF-MY) since 2009 to mitigate this issue in Setiu, Terengganu. We’ve aided in turtle hatcheries to provide a safe hatching environment, safe from poachers as well as providing the locals in the nearby village (Kampung Mangkuk) an additional revenue stream for their involvement in conservation efforts.
As part of hatchery work, known turtle nesting sites are patrolled every night and the turtle eggs collected would be brought to the hatchery this patrolling also ward off poachers. We also engage in the geo-tagging of turtles to track their location which provides insights into the turtles’ life such as distance swam and can help predict when they will be nesting.
Since 2009, the Project Orion team has also contributed to the development of Kampung Mangkuk such as infrastructure construction, support of entrepreneur start-ups, maintaining of the activity center, as well as assist in the outreach to the locals in the effort to spread the importance of conservation.
