Homemakers began in 2020. Our first apartment was for a friend who had to leave her apartment to move into assisted living. She didn't have any money and could not move all of her belongings, so she had to leave most of her furniture behind. She had her bed, a few chairs, and some family keepsakes. She stayed in bed all day and depression set in. She felt as if her home was no longer there to enjoy. Worried about her worsening depression, we had the idea to furnish her apartment with Thrift Stores and second-hand items creating a "homey" feel to her new apartment. We were able to fully furnish her entire apartment. Her depression lifted, and she began to get out of bed, read books, watch TV, and see visitors. She told us it was because we had given her hope. Soon after we helped a struggling middle-aged man with wellness issues. He had almost nothing to his name, only a chair to sit on and a mattress on the floor to sleep on. We furnished his apartments with secondhand donations, Thrift Store finds, and monetary donations.
In December 2021, we were asked by a friend of our next client, if we could help furnish the apartment of her friend. She was living in a woman's shelter, hiding from her abusive partner. The daughter begged her mother to run away from her husband because the child was afraid that "Dad is going to kill you". They ran away in the middle of the night with only a bag of clothes. They were living in hiding and fearing for their lives. They were able to get help finding an apartment and we were asked if we could furnish their new apartment. We were able to create a space that was safe, fully furnished, and create a "Homey" new start for the mother and daughter.
After the apartment in December of 2021, four women (we) decided to start a non-profit organization called "Homemakers-Bringing Hope. Restoring Home." Our mission is to support survivors of Domestic abuse and their children who are running from their abusive partners/parents. It is common for Domestic Violence victims to not leave their abusers because their abuser often controls money as a way to keep their victim from leaving. In March, we began to work alongside mental health and wellness agencies to furnish apartments for those in need of the most help. We began "Homemakers" officially in March of 2022. In 5 months, we have been able to help seven adults and five children escape abusive situations. Each fully furnished apartment costs roughly $800.00. Our charity uses only secondhand donations, Thrift Store finds, monetary donations, and clearance items. We are furnishing 1-2 apartments per month, depending on our ability and inventory. We are asking for monetary help so we can continue to help these survivors, and especially the children of these abusive living situations.
Our mission is to continue our work furnishing apartments for Domestic Abuse survivors and their children. We only use mostly secondhand items because we are able to give more to these families that would normally be at an extraordinary cost if new. Any donation would be appreciated. A one-bedroom apartment costs around $600, and a 2 bedroom is roughly $800. As you can see from our video, we put a great deal of time into making a "home" type feeling for all the apartments we do, especially in children's rooms. We spend around 40-50 (sometimes more) hours searching Facebook marketplace, local thrift stores, and yard sales to collect items that are in good condition and create a sense of continuity within each room.
We appreciate all donations. Please also follow our Facebook page, "Homemakers - Building Hope, Restoring Home." to see your donations at work!
