About Howton U.!
Howton U. is a new series that follows the comedic misadventures of Taylor, Jay, Alex, three freshman at Howton U., one the nation’s premiere HBCUs. Howton U. was created as a platform to share social commentary and experiences about life at an HBCU. But what’s special about Howton U. is that it utilizes current HBCU students to create the series.
Using satirical humor to express the highs and lows of the HBCU experience, the series pays tribute to the historic value of HBCUs. Howton U. blends influences from shows like Martin, A Different World, Everybody Hates Chris, and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air with today’s cultural nuances placed in a collegiate setting.
Howton U. Creation
As a Howard University alumni, I noticed there hadn’t been a show documenting these experiences since A Different World. There’s an opportunity in the TV and film industry to increase access to resources, training and development for African-American students.
Howton U. was created not just for entertainment, but learning and exposure for students. The students’ help produce, direct, edit and promote the web series. They learn various components of the business and not just have a show they’ve contributed but one that reflects their lives and experiences.
Howton U. Pride!!!
Howton U. expresses the unique experiences that take place at various HBCUs. Adding to that authenticity of the series, filming took place at an HBCU campus, giving the audience even more of a reason to connect with Howton U. In short, I hope that students view the series and see a reflection of themselves and their peers.
