Who We are

Little Light is a registered NGO, providing vital services to residents of one of Kampala's poorest slums:

  • Kindergarten education and meals for 150 children, ages 3 to 6
  • Primary school sponsorship for 90 children
  • Free healthcare, first aid, and community health education
  • Women's peer group with artisan paper bead business and micro lending
  • Youth empowerment through mentoring and entrepreneur projects

Visit LittleLight.co.ug for more information.

We're a small, young organization which has faced many challenges.  In the past 7 years, we've gotten by on the power of volunteers and small donations.  Right now, we're struggling to keep the kindergarten open and the kids fed.

I recently asked Charles, the clinic manager, if it's true the kindergarten might have to close.  His response:

Yes, it's true.  But as Little Light staff, we can't agree to let that happen.  We are ready to volunteer, just for the kids.  You know, what we have is hope.  Hope is the solution to this problem.

What We Need & What You Get

Our goal is to raise $10,000, enough to keep the children's center operating for 6 months.  This will keep the kids in school through the holiday season and beyond, while we secure long-term funding and find sponsors for every single child.  We're offering rewards as thanks for your donations:

  • $1: A big thank-you from our team, and the chance to show Little Light you care by adding your face to a video message we'll send to the staff and children in Uganda.
  • $5: A handwritten thank-you card from one of our dedicated volunteers.

  • $10: A 3x3 glossy sticker with Little Light's logo

  • $25: paper bead bracelet handmade by the Umoja women's group

  • $35: We'll give one of our youth group's members a solar-powered flashlight.

  • $50: Destreet Art shirt - these are hand-silkscreened and painted T's and tanks, custom made for you.  Visit Kampala's creative artist Kabati Ayub, aka Destreet Art's photostream to choose from many available styles.  Let us know which design, color, and size you want, and we'll work with Destreet Art to get you a one-of-a-kind shirt.

  • $60: Little Light T-shirt

  • $75: We're offering one necklace made by Barbara of Bedubara (https://www.etsy.com/shop/Bedubara), who combines elements of African and Middle Eastern beauty in her work.  This is a 40-inch necklace with 6 strands of black faceted beads, featuring a white quartz bead set in the crystals of a black faceted geode.

  • $230: Sponsor one of our nursery school children for a full year of school tuition, supplies, and fees.  Receive photos and updates on the child's academic progress and health.

Please note that perks and sponsorship information will be sent out at the beginning of December.
