Me, Myself, & You: A Game for Adults with Autism
Each year, 50,000 individuals with autism transition to adulthood and lose access to the resources once available to them as students and kids. While there are many social tools and resources designed for youth with autism, there is a severe resource cliff once these children reach 18 and enter adulthood.
We are a team of three female engineering students at Stanford University. For our Senior Capstone project, we were determined to develop a product to start to fill this resource gap. Back in January, we set out on a mission to spend as much time as possible interviewing and getting to know several adults (ages 18+) with autism in order to design a meaningful product for them. By developing these connections and friendships with individuals on the spectrum, we were able to better understand what type of product to design in order to address the common desire for peer to peer connection, human connection, and friendship.
This is how we came to design Me, Myself, and You, a multiplayer board game that facilitates interactions and helps build social connections. The game includes four types of cards: Solo, Partner, Team, and Challenge cards, that advance the players along the course of a board in order to get to know each other better and partake in goofy and sometimes surprisingly profound activities together. The game design thoughtfully incorporates a sense of structure, appropriate language, and accommodations for sensory sensitivities - important aspects we learned through our extensive user interviews.
We've tested the game with roughly 60 users locally in the Bay Area and they've loved it! One user, Eli, from Project SEARCH told us: "I enjoy playing this game because it allows you to learn new things about your friends."
While the game was initially designed for individuals with autism 18+, the content and skill level is appropriate for ages 12+. Me, Myself, & You is a fun game for everyone whether you'd like to break the ice with new friends or learn new things about your current friends just as Eli did!
We are looking for interested buyers and any individuals who care about this cause to support us as we move into manufacturing the game on a larger scale. Your money will be going straight to the materials required to produce the finished board game and shipping costs to deliver the game to your doorstep. We are not taking any profits from this product's sales. Our primary goal in this project was to design something real in the world that helps at least one person! Join us in our effort to manufacture enough games to make an impact on the lives of several adults with autism and their loved ones!
