Our Story
We are raising money to improve our
community Auditorium in Ajijic, a small village of 10,000 people in western Mexico.
The Auditorium is 40 years old and the local government does not have any money
to keep it in good repair. Our current project is to upgrade the air conditioning
because it is old, very noisy, and doesn’t cool down the building.
The Impact
The auditorium meets a huge community
need. School graduations are held here. In the evenings it is used for
dramatic, musical, folkloric dance, and mariachi shows.
Most days the sun beats
down on the roof all day and it gets pretty hot in there. The local audiences
have been waiting many years for an improvement in the air conditioning system.

Who's Organizing this?
It’s organized by Pro Auditorio, a
registered non-profit whose only purpose is to improve the Ajijic Auditorium.
Three years ago we successfully obtained Mexican federal assistance for a program to significantly improve the interior acoustics. We are still working to improve the lighting, sound, and the seating (representing future budget needs for $25,000 USD). Our volunteer design consultant is
retired architect Thom Weeks who has extensive performance-space remodeling
experience.

Technical Details of this Project
To isolate the exterior noises from
trucks and near-by band concerts we will build solid ducts for both air supply and the extraction lines, complete with sound-absorbing linings. We will recondition the cooling and extraction equipment and
upgrade the noisy bearings.

These are the pieces of equipment that will be reconditioned, and the ducts that will be replaced as part of this project.Project Cost
Construction of new ducts and
reconditioning of the mechanical equipment will cost $18,000 USD. We have in
the bank $8,000 USD from our annual fund-raising ‘Lip Sync’ show. We need to
raise the outstanding balance of $10,000 USD in order to complete this project.
Our Annual Lip Sync Fundraiser
Every year in January,
Michael McLaughlin produces and directs the Lip Sync show which has become
the biggest and oldest Lip Sync anywhere. It is light-hearted and
popular. All the proceeds go to benefit the Auditorium, but they are not
enough to cover the projects we want to complete. That's the reason for
this campaign.
