OUR Restroom (One Unisex Restroom) is a new initiative that will work to educate business owners about the importance of taking gender out of the equation when it comes to single-stall restrooms.
![]()
Patrons will be able to utilize the OUR Restroom website to request that information be sent to local businesses in their area, letting business owners know that gendered restrooms can put many people in uncomfortable and unsafe situations.
For many business owners, the only thing standing in the way of all-gender restrooms is a lack of knowledge around their importance!

We are seeking funding in order to:
• Launch an interactive, user-friendly (& mobile-ready) website where you can let us know all about the businesses in your area that need to be educated!
• Support outreach to press & media so that we can spread the word about OUR Restroom!
• Fund the printing and mailing of informative & accessible postcards for one year of operation. The postcards that businesses will receive look like this:

Supporting this work will, of course, bring increased safety and comfort to thousands of people, and education to many business owners who need it!
In addition to those benefits, there are some pretty exciting rewards that come along with your donation. They include:
-
A live, online concert (broadcast from a bathroom, of course) from many of your favorite musicians!
-
The Restroom Sessions: a digital compilation of new, acoustic recordings from Jenny Owen Youngs, Allison Weiss, Vivek Shraya, Mal Blum, and many more awesome musical humans!
-
Exclusive Lil Zee Tee & Goodies: A campaign-exclusive tee shirt featuring our favorite mascot of all time, Lil Zee, plus other goodies like bandanas, posters and buttons!
-
iO Tillett Wright Signed Photograph: A limited edition, signed print from the brilliant iO Tillett Wright, founder of the Self Evident Truths movement, and incredible LGBTQ rights activist.
-
Dinner with Kristin Russo & Allison Weiss: A chance to talk more about the movement, or just decompress and talk about cats, pizza, music, and life with two of the brains behind the OUR Restroom movement.

There are countless people whose lives would be made more comfortable by establishments that provide all-gender bathrooms, including: transgender or gender nonconforming people who may risk unsafe or uncomfortable confrontations by entering a gendered bathroom, parents/caretakers whose children may be a different gender than they are, people whose caregivers may be a different gender than them, etc. As a matter of fact, many cities have adopted laws saying that single stall bathrooms must be gender neutral.
![]()
Changing a single stall, single occupancy bathroom into a unisex, all-gender, or gender neutral bathroom requires NO additional construction and NO paperwork, aside from a new bathroom sign. For many customers, nothing will change – they will still use this bathroom one at a time. But for many others, this change will greatly impact the discomfort or comfort experienced when using that business’ facilities.

If you can't contribute financially, please help us spread the word by sharing our video or any of the images on this page! Sharing the campaign on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Tumblr, or anywhere else is incredibly helpful to bringing awareness around the campaign & the need for all-gender restrooms!!

Hi! My name is Kristin, and I've been working with LGBTQ young people and their friends & families for over a decade. I am the CEO of LGBTQ youth organization
Everyone Is Gay, I host and produce several online video series that help facilitate dialogues around sexuality and gender, I co-authored
This is a Book for Parents of Gay Kids, and I also have my Master's Degree in Gender Studies.
After many years of walking into restaurants, bars, and other businesses and feeling frustrated by their single-stall, gendered restrooms, I started talking to my friends -- many of whom felt the same! My friend Allison Weiss came on board to help me go after our shared goal: to work together to educate business owners nationwide (& beyond) so that they can understand the impact of having unisex restrooms. And, voila, OUR Restroom was born!
