We think about what we put in our bodies but it’s time to consider what we put on our bodies, too.

The skin is the body’s largest organ. You’ve heard it before, right? Yet still, we take this for granted, applying synthetic beauty products with little consideration for how much the impact on our bodies. 

As part of our mission to promote protection without pollution, we’re developing natural sunscreen formulas with zero pollution for your skin and your world. Palm & Pine will provide your skin with the sun protection it needs. Natural, nourishing ingredients, and zero plastic waste.

Conventional sunscreens contain traditional UV filters and synthetic fragrances, all packaged in convenient plastic pumps, sprays, and tubes. Bad for our skin and producing plastic waste that will end up in landfills or worse, the ocean - until the end of time. Although there are natural sunscreens available, the often sticky formulas leave you looking like a ghost.

It would be predictable if we told you that we're better than the rest, so it's easier if we show you...

We need sunscreen. In fact, to prevent sun damage and ageing, we should be using it every single day. Sunscreen is not just for summer.

And yet, the thought of putting traditional sunscreens on our skin every day makes us feel, well... a little uncomfortable. We believe, however, that if you don't want to put sunscreen on your skin every morning, then you're using the wrong sunscreen.

So what's the problem with normal sunscreen?

Earlier this year the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) – one of the two main global regulators of sunscreen ingredients around the world alongside the European Commission – removed 14 of the 16 chemicals found in sunscreens from its GRASE (generally accepted as safe and effective) category due to insufficient safety data. 

Traces of these filters absorb through the skin into the bloodstream and have been detected in urine and breastmilk too. 

This alone doesn’t mean sunscreen is unsafe but where there is doubt, we know what we prefer...

No uncertain chemicals. Simply nature’s best.

We believe in sunscreen that is TRULY ocean-friendly. Not just the product but the packaging too.  Ocean friendly but sold in ‘green’ plastic? Nah, we’re not buying this. So we’re on a mission.

Palm & Pine are striving to provide an alternative.

Last year between France and the UK alone, 41 million people used sun protection.

Even if only half of those people actually bought sunscreen, that’s over 20 million brand new plastic bottles entering the environment, (and potentially the ocean), from this one product alone.

We chose aluminium containers. Why?

They are made from recycled aluminium, plus they can be recycled and reused.

Sleek, minimalist, lightweight.

We could’ve used squeezy bio-plastic tubes made of sugarcane and other plant-based materials, but they do not biodegrade as you are led to believe*. 

You're told plant-based plastics are biodegradable but they will only break down in an industrial composting facility, not your average garden compost bin. They won’t biodegrade at all buried in a landfill. There, they will sit for hundreds or thousands of years like any other piece of plastic waste.

That's not all...

The recycling infrastructure isn't yet in place which means that most bio-plastics can't even be recycled. 

So out of the options currently available, we believe that 

Recycled | Reusable | Recyclable

Is the best way to go. 

And the future? 100% compostable. Not the industrial compostable kind but the real, garden compost bin kind. The technology is a little way off being ready but we’re patient and committed to making zero waste our goal.

So who are we for? The sunshine lovers who adventure amongst the palms and the pines,
summer, and winter. The surfers, snowboarders, nomads, and travellers. Protection wherever and whenever you play. 

At Palm & Pine, we have designed sunscreen that combines skin and environmental care. Our mission is to offer suncare that has minimal impact on our shared environment. Products that we are free to enjoy and move us all closer towards a plastic-free life.
