Alienation Syndrome (PAS), a term coined by Dr. Richard A. Gardner to describe “…a
disorder in which a child, on an ongoing basis, belittles and insults one
parent without justification, due to a combination of factors, including
indoctrination by the other parent.” The clip from the recent Brazilian documentary La Morte Inventada included above dramatically illustrates the seriousness of the problem. Brazil was the first country to make Parental Alienation illegal. And in Thousand Oaks, California one man had to resort to desperate measures to publicize what he went through due to PAS:

Here are the Eight Symptoms of Parental Alienation Syndrome:

Consistently put down the targeted parent
·
Make reasons for their behavior that are weak or
absurd
·
Have a lack of ambivalence towards the targeted parent
·
Claim that their words and actions are their own
·
Be supported in these acts by the alienating parent
·
Have an absence of guilt regarding their behavior
toward or the exploitation of
the targeted parent
·
Adopt borrowed scenarios
·
Extend the animosity to the targeted parent’s side of
the family
The purpose of this show is to help the psychiatric
and legal professions to understand how their lack of knowledge on this global
and divisive issue has exacerbated the trauma so many families are going

and encourage therapists, psychiatrists, mediators, lawyers, and judges, not
only to recognize the PAS dynamic when it is put in front of them, but to educate
themselves so that they can begin to find new ways to help these families.
On this episode of INSIGHT, we bring together a panel
of experts including Linda Kase-Gottlieb and Dr. William Bernet as well as alienated
parents, adults who were alienated as children, dramatic readings from family
therapy case notes, and much more. Once it has aired on KVCR, our plan will be
to market the show to other PBS stations as well as to individuals,
groups, universities, libraries, medical and family-orientated establishments
around the country and around the world.
