Fund the Future
Over a decade ago, a group of dedicated volunteers got the deed for an abandoned railroad line with the dream of creating a recreational trail for bikers, hikers, runners and horseback riders.
Now an 8 mile trail built by volunteers stretches from Garden Plain past Goddard. With your help, the trail can extend another 8 miles east to Wichita and make it easier to meet up with the planned metropolitan bikeway system.
The time is now - your contribution is doubled today as part of a matching grant from the Sunflower Foundation.
2015 is a year of possibilities for trails in Wichita. On both the east and west sides of town, trail advocates from Prairie Travelers and partner organization Andover-Augusta Rail Trail Initiative (AARTI) are diligently working to create regional transportation connections that include bicyclists and pedestrians. Their combined efforts could result in a 50 mile designated bikeway stretching from Garden Plain to Augusta. Your financial support brings us closer to that goal.
Where does the money go?
Prairie Travelers, the nonprofit organization leading the charge on this effort, has applied for a $55,000 matching grant from the Sunflower Foundation.
- While volunteer labor gets the work done, materials aren't free. The funding raised here goes to purchase equipment and supplies to create the trail, including fine crushed limestone and trail enhancements.
- This summer, Prairie Travelers will host a team from the AmeriCorps National Civilian Conservation Corps. These 10-12 team members volunteer 40+ hours a week for 6-13 weeks in communities across the country, including ours. They will jumpstart the construction of the trail expansion and help make our dream a reality.
The Impact
Your contribution helps create a healthier community. Beyond the physical transformation of the abandoned railway, trails help promote healthy, active lifestyles and build community. Prairie Travelers has more than a decade of experience building trails, and a solid track record.
