Since its establishment in 2011, Muskegon’s local running group, “For the Run of It,” has been focused on helping community members become healthier while meeting their fitness goals.  Our group runs year round outdoors.  The winter actually brings an increase in participation!  Although Muskegon has miles of incredible bike trails that we – and many others – take advantage of, these trails are not plowed during the winter.  As a result, all of us who want to exercise outside find ourselves walking in slippery streets with limited visibility; this poses a real threat to our safety.

After several months of working with the City of Muskegon, the 1 in 21 Foundation, and the Muskegon Community Foundation, we have developed a plan to regularly remove the snow from a 2-mile portion of the downtown Lakeshore Bike Trail.  This would allow our group, and many other people in our community, to take advantage of the bike path from the Muskegon YMCA to Fisherman's Landing year round.  In order to remove snow for the remaining winter months, we estimate total costs of $1,300.  Of this, we have already raised $500.  If we exceed our fundraising goal, we will begin saving funds to use for snow removal during the 2014-2015 winter.  We will also look into expanding the snow removal from a 2-mile stretch to a larger stretch.  At the end of the day, every penny raised will go directly toward removing the snow from our bike path and creating an outdoor space that can be enjoyed year round.
