Rocket takes you out of your world and into the world of 1950's dirt track racing. When a champion driver is killed right before he reaches the finish line of a 1947 locals race, his legacy falls on the shoulder of his only child...a daughter named Annie. Twelve years later, Annie lives a reclusive life on the remnants of her father’s ranch. When a privileged and wealthy man named Weston unexpectedly shows up on Annie’s farm, she is tasked with teaching him the ins and outs of competitive dirt track racing, while at the same time searching for a self-identity she can comfortably wear.

We are a highly motivated, graduate level creative team from Chapman University. Our group, having made an award winning 1940's period film last year, cannot wait to plunge into this new project.

Rocket's director grew up immersed in the racing world, and she is eager to tell a story about both the female racing experience and the cars that enriched her childhood. There has never been a film that features these specific machines, and we are incredibly excited to finally be putting them on screen. There is also a severe lack of strong female characters with depth in today's movies and television. Rocket will be a one of a kind film that inspires young women to go out of their comfort zone, follow their dreams, and discover what they really want out of life.

We are currently hard a work in the middle of pre-production, with shooting set to begin in late October.
We have secured the period race cars and a beautiful 200 acre ranch in California on which to race them. This ranch comes complete with rolling hills, dirt tracks, period-style horse barns and 1950’s farming equipment.

We also have the support of two professional and highly talented stunt coordinators, Jennifer "Fatty" Caputo and Andy Armstrong (Thor, The Amazing Spider Man). They will be leading our amazing stunt driver team.

The Rocket team has been granted access to one of the best vintage race car collections in the country. Access to cars like this has never happened before on film and we are seeking support and contributions to help us secure the film gear we need to capture these beautiful pieces of rare machinery on camera. Check out what we are working with below!
Our Production Designer created a Rocket look book to get an idea of the feel, texture, and color palette we plan to have for the film. Take a look at a few of her pages here:

After we meet these important production needs, there are three major areas of our budget that we are looking to get sponsored to bring our film to the next level:
The look and feeling of these lenses is untouchable. Action packed films such as the Mission Impossible series, Django Unchained and Star Wars have been shot on anamorphic lenses. The lenses will allow us to shoot in the cinematic 2.40:1 aspect ratio and utilize the full image sensor instead of cropping and losing a majority of the information. The technology was originally developed and used in old Westerns to capture the scope of the beautiful, mountainous vistas. Rocket is the perfect project to employ these lenses: we've got high speed racing cars, we've got awe inspiring views.

The single gear IndyCars only know how to do one thing: go fast. We need a camera car that can keep up on the rough terrain of our location while maintaining stability and speed. This camera car will allow us to utilize car-to-car photography that will highlight the brute strength and willpower it takes to race our period 1950's IndyCars.

One of the most important factors in setting the 1959 time period is the music. We want to blast Little Richard's "Tutti Frutti" as we watch Annie whip around the hairpin turn of her track for the first time; listen to The Crests "Sixteen Candles" with Annie as she tinkers with her cars in her makeshift garage, and play Little Richard's "Long Tall Sally" as Annie and Weston race neck and neck around the track. Music can truly set the tone of any film, and we hope to have access to a few of the songs and artists that truly defined the late 1950's rock 'n' roll scene.

Filming an action movie at this level requires many different moving parts. In order to make sure all of those moving parts are coordinated properly and working correctly, our entire team will have to operate at the top of our game. Having adequate funding for this project ensures that we will able to 100% focus on bringing Rocket to a level we are all proud of, while keeping the cast and crew safe on set.
