Through Book People, Ruth Erb has been sharing her passion for books with the Richmond community and the rest of the world for the past 37 years. Every day brings new opportunities to brighten customers' lives with the perfect book, a beautifully illustrated fairy tale for a young child, or a favorite novel which has been out of print for years.
Book People has something for everyone. Students find a wide selection of beautiful art books which even a starving artist can afford, and collectors find rare antiques. Book People gives the community an opportunity to meet local authors, and regularly hosts public fun events such as a monthly German Scrabble game.
As Ruth considers retirement, we want to ensure that Book People remains a community gathering spot where a passion for books continues to be shared. As Ruth would say, we want to be able to "stay in passion" for another 37 years.
We need your help to make Ruth's dream a reality. The minimum needed to renovate the shop is $50,000.
That money will be used for renovations, including:
- Removing the original carpet and restoring the wood floors.
- Making electrical improvements, especially improving the lighting!
- New paint inside and out.
- Restroom improvements.
- Replacement shelving units (stronger ones)!
- A sales counter
- A point of sale system.
- Underwriting operating expenses during the time the store is closed for renovations (see below) and bridging the first three to four months of operations when we reopen.
These improvements are really the bare minimum needed to keep our doors open, which is why your contribution is so greatly appreciated.
Indiegogo provides services to earn their cut: 8% of funds raised, 30 cents per contribution (includes platform and credit card fees), and cost of perks and shipping them to contributors.
Christmas shoppers looking for a meaningful gift that will benefit the community can donate to the campaign honoring a special someone. We will notify the honoree of the contribution made in their name. Then, if the campaign ends successfully, they will receive the contribution perk, like a ceramic mug or a T-shirt featuring the Book People Logo.
You can also help by spreading the word!
- Use Indiegogo's share tools, use the hashtag (#bookpeoplerva) and tag us!
- We're on Facebook @ Book People Richmond and on Twitter and Instagram @(bookpeoplerva).
- Call your friends and family and tell them about the awesome perks they can receive for supporting independent book sellers and literacy. Then hound them relentlessly like a small child on a sugar rush who has to have that new book NOW!
A huge “Thank You!” for helping keep Ruth's Passion alive!
