Project Summary
If we have had the chance to chat for atleast five minutes this fall- I’ve likely excitedly spoken to you of my plans to develop an agricultural operation. In 5 years, my operation will have 6 acres of cider producing apple trees, as well as a thriving flower business.
Your contribution will allow me to plant literal seeds to “grow” my business” My goal is to raise $1000. I’m offering two levels of rewards; for $50 and above I’ll be offering handmade wreaths and for contributions $15-$49 a bouquet of flowers produced on my farm (available once my flowers come into production is 2021).
This fall I planted 90 of the first trees in my orchard. I’ll be producing varieties specifically for juice for the hard cider industry. I plan to annually plant more trees untill a six acre field is developed into orchard land. As a means to help create income in my early years untill the trees start bearing fruit I’m starting a small cut flower business; partially to help pay for trees and because growing has always been a passion of mine. Flowers will be offered in a variety of levels including weekly subscriptions, one-off purchases, a U-pick and a flower ‘bucket service’ specific for weddings and events. Although I’ve worked most of the passed decade in construction, I have a degree in Agriculture and am working towards having a measure of farming in my life again to be able to contribute this service to my community. I’ve taken the steps of registering for the ‘Future Farmers’ program through the department of agriculture, become a resident company at the Startup zone; and am currently developing a proposal for the perennial crops funding program. At this stage I’m looking for seed money for my floriculture operation; literally money for seeds in which to plant in the spring! Contributions towards this will allow me to establish a business which will be able to feed itself over time and become a viable orchard down the road.
What I Need & What You Get.
I’m looking to raise $1,000- This will cover costs to establish my planting beds, help purchase soil ammendments (compost); and of course seeds!
I’m offering two levels of rewards in thanks for contributions. Christmas wreaths will be available for no-contact delivery (PEI only, available immediately). A second level of reward will be bouquets from the first offering of my flowers available in early summer 2021; they will be available for pick up at Red Island Cider’s location in Charlottetown.
Risks & Challenges
Having been raised on a farm, obtaining a degree in agriculture and after working in a broad range of agricultural operations I thoroughly appreciate the specific challenges of the sector. My background has taught me tenacity, problem solving and innovation as tools to build a successful, diverse and sustainable agribusiness.
Other Ways You Can Help
I’d appreciate if you would spread the word about my crowd sourcing fundraiser. Right before Christmas, and especially with the economic instability that Covid has brought to many of us it’s understandable not everyone can contribute, but I am very thankful for anyone who can pass the world along regardless of ability to financially contribute.
