E Hula Mau® is Southern California’s only Hula and Chant competition. It takes place annually over Labor Day weekend (Sept 2, 3, & 4 2016) at the Terrace Theatre at the Long Beach Performing Arts Center. Various hālau will perform in multiple categories including solo and group performances in both the ancient kahiko and modern ʻauana styles of hula. It is important for our wahine to represent Hālau Nā Mamo O Pana’ewa this year so that we may honor our esteemed lineage and our fellow Nā Mamo ʻohana while perpetuating and preserving the art of hula.

What are these funds for?
Transportation, performance fees, and accommodations for musicians flown in from Hawaiʻi
Construction and fabric costs for costumes
Fresh flower adornments from Hawaiʻi
Lodging and rehearsal space for duration of competition weekend
What you get
As added incentive we hope to provide you with some exciting perks for your donations. Whether at the Liko level or the ʻŌhiʻa Lehua level, all contributions are humbly accepted with the utmost appreciation! Perks may range from facebook shout-outs to tickets to (and other bonuses at) our upcoming Ho’ike, May 14, 2016, so you can get to know our hālau and get a sneak peek of what you might expect at E Hula Mau®. This year we have a special guest, Nā Hōkū Hanohano award winning hula musician, Mark Yamanaka who will be flying in from Hawaiʻi to perform exclusively with our school. ![]()
Meet Our Wahine!

(
Wahine Soloist & Wahine Group) Kehaulani has been dancing hula since the age of five and has loved every moment of it and considers the hālau a part of her ʻohana. Dancing with this group of amazing women under Kumu Keoki's care and guidance holds a special and sacred place in her heart. Kehau hopes to honor our kupuna, our lineage, and Kumu as we perpetuate the hula at E Hula Mau®. Mahalo to the whole hālau for their support and aloha. We hope to make you proud!

(Wahine Group) When Kamanu first discovered the beauty of hula she had believed it was a gift reserved for the natives of the land. Sadly pushing away any dreams of learning hula, she went on to study jazz, ballet, tap, hip hop, modern dance as well as her native Chilean Cueca dances. It wasnʻt until she settled into an acting career in Los Angeles that she reconnected with an old college friend Kehaulani who was studying to be Alakaʻi at Hula Hālau Nā Mamo O Panaʻewa. It was there she learned that hula was for anyone with a passion to learn it and perpetuate the culture. After over 20 years of dance and 2 years of papa hula, she finds herself in her second E Hula Mau® competition and just as in love with the art as she was as a child. Mahalo nui to Kumu, Kehau, her husband and ʻohana for this great gift.

(Wahine Group) Stephanie Noelani: What started out as a casual search for more technique-based instruction turned into a full immersion in, and falling in love with hula. Considering the cultural depth and gravitas that is demanded by the study of Hawaiian hula, Noe thinks of it as her favorite 4 unit class (unofficially). It is an active form of meditation for her and she has found a wonderful community led by a respected and knowledgeable Kumu. It has taught her invaluable lessons about building character, constructive attitudes, and being compassionate with others. She firmly believes hula is healing and empowering for all involved, and thanks each and every person for their support of this precious art! Mahalo nui loa!

(Wahine Group) Newbie to hula and the Nā Mamo ʻohana, Keanu is honored and excited to represent such an elite group and to contribute in the preservation of such a beautiful tradition and culture. Keanu came to the hālau with 26+ years dance experience and directly off of a 5 year run as lead choreographer for an LA-based dance company, before discovering hula. Despite her vast experiences in the larger dance world, Keanu proudly boasts “this is the most supportive, most dedicated group of women I’ve ever worked with!" I hope I make you wahine, our Kumu, and the entire hālau proud!” #panaewastrong

Wahine Group) Lokelani has been dancing with Nā Mamo since 2011 and loves every minute of it. Loke has always had a place in her heart for hula. Ever since her first trip to Oahu at age 3, she has forever been touched with the spirit of aloha. It is with great honor to represent the lineage of Nā Mamo and to be a part of such a wonderful ʻohana. May the journey continue...Imua.

(Wahine Group) Kayla Nalani: Has been dancing hula since she was six years old, although she is fairly new to the Nā Mamo ʻohana, hula is and will forever be her passion and aspiration. There is not another group of amazing women I would want to go through this journey with. 'A 'ohe Hana Nui Ke Alu 'ia

(Wahine Group) Makana has been dancing with Na Mamo for the past 2 years. She has wanted to be a hula dancer ever since she was a little girl. Her mom used to watch Elvis Presley movies set in Hawaii, which started her passion. Makana is excited about being part of the competition team because " when you're a part of something bigger than yourself, it makes you better." She honestly has never been this happy until joining the hālau. She loves her hula ʻohana. They are the most kind, loving and supportive group of people she has ever known. Makana is thrilled for this opportunity to share her aloha with all of you.

Wahine Group) Since the age of 12, dancing has been a important part of Lei'ohu's life. She watched her family immerse into hula, igniting her journey and passion with hawaiian culture. Dancing with Hālau Nā Mamo O Panaʻewa has been an amazing experience! This is her first competition and she is ready to dance her heart out with the support of Kumu Keoki and her haumāna. Mahalo Kumu Keoki for the time and dedication you've spent with us, my hula girls, and my family.
About Our Hālau
Located in sunny Southern California (Glendale), and established in 2010, Hālau Nā Mamo O Pana’ewa (The Cherished Offspring of Pana’ewa) and Kumu Hula (Teacher of Hula) Keoki Wang continues the traditions and legacies of his award-winning teachers including Kumu Hula Sonny Ching, Kumu Hula Noelani McIntosh and Kumu Hula Kunewa Mook through dance, songs and traditional Hawaiian chants. More information can be found at www.hhnmop.com
Risks & Challenges
Although this is not Hālau Nā Mamo O Pana’ewa’s first year competing at E Hula Mau®, we are even more ambitious, striving to do our best to represent our lineage. This will be the largest wahine line we have ever performed with, and with more people comes larger costs. In order to ensure that all 8 women are able to perform, without sacrificing the quality of costumes, adornments, musicians, or other elements, we really do need to meet our projected budget of $20,000. We would like the opportunity to concentrate solely on putting all our aloha into our hula over worrying about expenses, We have a respected lineage and reputation to uphold and we want to make everyone proud!
