Brenda is an infomercial host for The Shape Shifter; a popular weight-loss product that boldly proclaims to “shape shift” your flabby body into Barbie doll perfection.

On the surface, Brenda doesn’t seem to have a problem with the fact that the entire production, herself included, knows the product is a complete fraud. She is always on the run from angry, dissatisfied and over-weight customers wanting their money back. Her only sanctuary is her binging from 7-11 junk food in her car or alone in her apartment late at night.

However, the guilt has finally pervaded her consciousness and Brenda must face herself and decide: Is she just as fraudulent as the product she sells?

She has been film production student at Santa Monica College since early 2014, and continues to hone her craft and learn everything she can about movies and the film production process.

The Santa Monica College Film Program will contribute roughly 60% to the film’s final budget by providing equipment, insurance and production space. In addition, the program brings together a talented crew of over 30 film students who are donating their time and expertise free of charge.

However, we still need to raise the remaining 40% of the budget to help pay for the following:

  • Craft services and meal catering - To keep our cast and crew fueled up
  • Location fees and permits - To secure the sets and locations we’ll film at
  • Production design - To buy props and dress our sets
  • Wardrobe, hair and make-up supplies - To bring our characters to life
  • Truck rental and gas - To transport our equipment between locations
  • Post-production - To bring the final sound and picture to a professional standard

The Santa Monica College Film Program emphasizes on collaboration, equality, and mentorship. SMC has a rich diversity of gender, ethnicities, nationalities, and socio-economic backgrounds. Every Fall and Spring semester a new film project is selected to be filmed throughout the semester.

Over the last two years the program has received considerable praise, and previous productions have won numerous awards and been accepted into numerous prestigious festivals; including Cannes and BAFTA.

Shape Shifter will be the 10th film produced by the program, and its first comedy.
