Short Summary
Many children in the US live with food insecurity (about 9m). This campaign hopes to use art in the form of a song, video and an optional children's book perk to raise money to help feed children who don't have enough to eat, and involve children who do, teaching them they can help others through art. As children listen to the video and music, or read the book offered as a perk, they will be helping to raise money for their peers who live with food insecurity. My hope here is this helps grow children's awareness that what they do matters.
All funds raised after expenses (i.e., platform fees, platform credit card expenses, and for those opting for a book "perk" "at cost" printing/shipping/tax expenses) will be donated to No Kid Hungry (https://www.nokidhungry.org). All such funds raised directly through campaign donations and indirectly through campaign streaming revenue will help children who live with food insecurity.
- I am a composer who hopes to use art to raise awareness and funds for children and families who live with food insecurity.
- Song Sprite, originally a song and now a video and children's book set to music, is about children finding their life's song, using it as a sort of a true north, to keep returning to and aiming it as they go through life.
- This campaign is aimed at raising enough money to pass along $20,000 to No Kid Hungry (net of platform, credit card, and/or perk "at cost" book expenses for those who donate $50 or more and receive a perk paperback copy of Song Sprite with an online link to the song).
Why This Approach?
My hope is to use art with the message that each child begins with a unique gift, a life song, that we should nurture. I also hope parents/teachers when they feel appropriate convey a message if they choose, that children engaging in the campaign (e.g., through the song, video, and book) are helping to raise funds for their peers who don't have enough to eat.
How Will It Work?
- You decide to make a donation....and you tell your friends!
- All donations under $50, after platform and related credit card fees, go to No Kid Hungry. You can listen to Song Sprite and/or watch the video using the link above (streaming revenue from the campaign donated to No Kid Hungry as well).
- If you donate $50 or more, you will receive a perk paper back book (printing, shipping & handling costs & tax will be deducted and all remaining proceeds donated to No Kid Hungry). The book is done with the image of holding your child in your lap or with you perhaps as a teacher surrounded by children, reading to them or listening to the song (the book has a QR code and link to the song), to nurture each child's song but also convey that they are helping raise money to help other children get food to eat.
- I am asking everyone to tell 5-10 others about the campaign, as making this go viral will be critical to getting to the $20,000 goal. Text for a draft email can be found at https://www.sugardoubts.com/no-kid-hungry-songs if that is helpful.
- E.g., for a $20 donation, 5% or $1 goes to Indiegogo, $.03 and 3% or $.63 goes to Stripe for credit card fees, and the remaining $18.37 goes to No Kid Hungry.
- E.g., for a $50 donation, 5% or $2.50 go to Indiegogo, $.03 and 3% or $1.53 goes to Stripe for credit card fees, $9.67 goes to Amazon for printing/shipping book costs (along with $.23 for tax), and the remaining $36.07 goes to No Kid Hungry (along with any campaign streaming revenue).
- Please note these estimates may change if Indiegogo or Amazon KDP change their policies during the campaign.
What We Need & What You Get
- I hope to raise enough to donate $20,000 to No Kid Hungry net of platform and perk related (at cost) expenses.
- One scenario: groups of 5 groups of 130 people each donate $5, $10, $20, $10, and $100 respectively to donate $20,558.20 (with $3,491.80 going to platform & at cost perk book expenses)
- Hopefully a perk of a song book (color paperback with link to music) that can be used to read to children, sing to them, sing with them, and let them know they are helping other children to encourage you to donate $50 or more.
- If the campaign does not reach the entire goal, all funds raised will still go to No Kid Hungry after platform costs to Indiegogo and Stripe, and "at cost" perk related expenses to Amazon (and for tax).
The Impact
Since March 2020, No Kid Hungry has sent $100 million through more than 2,300 grants to support local communities. These grants have helped schools, local nonprofits, and food banks serve more than 1.5 billion meals. So while money raised from this campaign may not solve our hunger problem, it will help.
What Will It Take To Reach the Goal?
If there are many paths to the $20,000 goal, one was stated above, another one looks like the following (these are estimates--platform/credit card fees and book printing/shipping costs may change but the idea of donating anything received after these costs remains constant):
- 3 groups of 650 each donate $5, $10, and $20 respectively donating $20,930.00 with $1,820.00 going to platform expenses.
- I hope the campaign goes viral. Whether you donate or not (and there's a stronger story if you do), please tell 5-10 people about the campaign and ask them to tell 5-10 etc. If 20% of that population donates, we should reach our goal.
Risks & Challenges
- Goal not met: this is a "flexible" campaign, so if the overall goal is not met, all funds raised after platform and book related (at cost) expenses will go to No Kid Hungry.
- The campaign has a better chance of succeeding if it goes viral (5-10 tell 5-10 who tell 5-10 etc, with 20% of those overall contributing). The campaign going viral depends on platform and other viewers telling others about the campaign and asking them to donate.
