Overview
The Dice is a graduation film by Sarah Tehranian, a cinematography student from the Masters Programme at Met Film School, London. It is a very creative adaptation of an award-winning stage play. In the film version, the offset world of the director and the actors and the onset world of the three political prisoners on stage merge into each other. It has an impressive array of brilliant cast and crew and will premiere at the Vue, West End at Leicester Square, London.

Short Summary

In the play, The Dice, three demoralised prisoners are allocated to the same cell. Adapting to the situation and ‘making the most of life’ locked up they find a unique way of settling arguments and making decisions in their imprisoned world. When the Warder arrives with the news that one of the prisoners is to be relocated the dice are used to decide who is to be moved. The outcome of this decision forces the inmates to reassess the power of The Dice.

The cast of the award-winning production of the play The Dice, meet on set to make a film of the production. Filming of the play is interspersed with offset discussions between the actors and the director. The two worlds merge, and we see the effect it has on all involved and how the world in the content and action in the play affect the relationship between the cast members and the director. We end up exploring human frailties: the inability to accept guilt, justifying our wrongdoings, and rejecting blame.

  • The playwright Forbes Bramble has been involved in the adaptation of his stage play into the film version
  • The original actors of the award-winning play: Tom Howland, Börje Fontalva, Kerem Kocaer, and Nigel Harvey, will be acting in this film
  • The original scriptwriter and director of the play, Nigel Harvey has created the screenplay and will be directing the film.

The Cast

Nigel Harvey

Nigel Harvey lived in Sweden for many years after music & theatre studies in London & Stockholm.  He joined The Stockholm Players in 1988 and in 1992  he was in the FEATS production: A Marriage Proposal, winning the prize for Best Actor. The following year he started ‘The Harvey-Davidson Theatre Company’ and ‘NH Music & Theatre Enterprises’.Since then he has worked as a freelance actor and artistic director. Nigel is also the script writer and director of this film.

BÖRJE FONTALVA

Börje trained in acting in the same acting schools in Madrid as Penélope Cruz or Javier Bardem in the late 90s. Over the next few years, he joined some of the most internationally acclaimed and prestigious theatre companies, such as Teatra Teatrae or Trece Gatos (Madrid - Spain), English Drama School (Leipzig - Germany), The Stockholm Players (Stockholm - Sweden) to mention a few.

Tom Howland

Tom Howland originally comes from the USA but migrated to Sweden in 1991. He retired in 2016 and now resides in England. At University, he studied drama and music and afterwards sang for 2 years in the Chicago Opera Chorus which also included performing at La Scala in 1979. He kept up his love of the theatre while residing in Stockholm through an amateur theatre group and is now hoping to do more of that in England. Tom sees his character in “The Dice” as the middle man. Someone who is there to keep the peace.

Kerem

Originally from Istanbul, Kerem travelled quite a bit before settling down in Sweden, where he met with the world of theatre. What started as a hobby turned quickly into a passion that constantly grew, first through Stockholm Players, Sweden's oldest English theatre company, and then through improvisation and Meisner. He moved to London in 2014 and has been continuing his drama studies at City Lit and Central since then. Most recently he performed with the Arcola theatre at the British Museum.

Cinematographer

Sarah is currently an MA Cinematography student at MET Film School, and The Dice - Short Film is her graduation project. She is a hardworking photographer and DoP. She started her career as a photojournalist in Iran working for several years on various projects. Later when she moved to Stockholm, she worked at numerous festivals, concert houses and theatre shows as an official photographer and videographer. Her work  for Stockholm Early Music Festival (SEMF) has been published in Swedish newspapers and magazines. Recently she moved  to London and has helped several Start-up companies by creating commercials and promoting videos for their businesses.

Sarah has been involved in The Dice Theatre show from he beginning and could not imagine working on any other stories than The Dice. She loves the political messages, and the many layers in this story, and is very excited to bring such amazing story to the screen.

The Impact

Everyone experiences moments in their life when they feel powerless and look for something to hold on to, blame, pledge to, or even use to create guilt. The Dice explores this timeless concept of human frailty in this story set in a totalitarian state rife with revolutions.

We feel this story is more relevant in today's political scenario of the world , more than ever before and we are very thankful for your help in making this project come to life.

Risks & Challenges

Any investment in film production involves a high degree of risk. This investment should not be made by anyone who cannot afford the loss of his or her entire investment. Before investments are made, the following risks must be carefully considered:

The success of any medium, whether film or television, depends on the public’s tastes and opinions at any given time. The likes and dislikes of the public vary greatly from day to day and can never be confirmed. As a result, it is impossible to determine the success of this, or any, film.

The prior or simultaneous release of a similar film may affect the popularity of this film.

As a result of the above factors, and others not listed here, only one of every five films made recoup their cost.

For the interest of all concerned, the investors realise they may not dispose of their investment at any time and that they bear the financial risk of their investment for an indefinite period of time.
