The Pig House
Education For All (EFA) is a grassroots organization operating in the village of Banket, Zimbabwe. It was started by Tiger Kushamba after he graduated from Whitman in 2004. Tiger wanted to create an education-focused nonprofit in a rural area as a way to give financial assistance to academically talented kids in his country who could not afford to go to school. EFA provides scholarships to pay for kids' school tuition and fees by supporting small income generating projects run by parents and kids in the community. Ninety percent of scholarship funds come from these efforts, which include a small garden, greenhouse, poultry project and piggery.
This project raises money for the Pig House. Two years ago, the entire project was destroyed, leaving Tiger and the community devastated. Fellow Whitman alumna Anna Batie spread the word amongst friends, and we raised over $5000 to help Tiger and Banket rebuild. They rebuilt the greenhouse and the garden, and built a bigger Pig House. Tiger realized that all we need to do is raise $1100 and EFA will become fully self-sustainable.
The idea is simple. With $1100, EFA can finish flooring the Pig House, and buy three pigs - a male and two sows. The pigs will have piglets. Parents and kids will raise the piglets to sell in nearby Chinhoyi town. Some of the money from the sales will go back into the Pig House to feed and care for the pigs. The profits from the sales will go towards scholarships for tuition and fees.
Anna, EFA's volunteer Donor Relations Coordinator, will collect funds raised and send them to Tiger via Western Union. This is the safest and cheapest way to send money to individuals in Zimbabwe. Tiger will provide photos and videos showing the project's progress, so you can see how your funds are being spent.
Please help us raise $1100 to make this a sustainable project. Anything raised over that amount will go to EFA to fund additional projects, such as a biogas project using animal manure, or to more scholarships so more Banket kids can go to school. You can help by donating what you can, by sharing this fundraiser among family and friends, and by spreading the word generally about the good work Tiger is doing in rural Zimbabwe.
