Background
Heinrich Schütz was an important Baroque composer whose music is so good that even J. S. Bach admired it. We think the world needs more Schütz, and we've cooked up a show that will make you a Schütz fanatic from the very first note.
The Plan
On December 6 and 7, Musica Nuova, The Weckmann Project, and special guests from Parthenia are coming together for a staged production of the Schütz Weihnachtshistorie (Christmas Story). This masterpiece isn't performed very often, and no one has staged it (as far as we know) in over 20 years.
Staging a work that wasn't originally staged brings it to life. We might be singing in German, but we will show you the Christmas story - frightened shepherds, exuberant angels, and pompous King Herod. In fact, our production has so much appeal that the December 7 concert is just for kids and families - and children under 10 are free!
What We Need & What You Get
Staging offers more to the audience, but requires more from the performers. Time. Effort. Preparation.
This campaign will directly support our talented and dedicated artists, and our relatively small production costs, like renting costumes and printing programs.
We are keeping ticket prices low to make this beautiful work available to as many people as possible. But it's a financial risk for our companies, and it means we must turn to you to help make this production possible. In return, please enjoy one of our musical perks - and more! - as thank you gifts.
What if we don't make our goal? We will still find a way to make these concerts happen. If we exceed our goal, we will be on our way to making this an annual event - plus! - if we hit $7,000, Liza will dress up like Schütz and serenade passersby in Davis Square - that's priceless!
Why This Project?
Today, classical music is trying to reinvent itself for a broader audience. Musica Nuova has been one of the few early music companies to bring theatrical elements to concerts, using inventive staging to highlight the drama and timeless themes of 17th century music. We create a meaningful context for new listeners while enriching the experience for everyone.
The Weckmann Project is a like-minded enterprise, and their Boston base opens the possibility of repeating this project next year in both cities. Our vision of the Schütz Christmas story has been recognized for its innovation by the Paul R. Judy Center for Applied Research.
