Our Story

We are a group of Thompson Rivers University (TRU) students in Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada, who are interested in monitoring weather and climate change in hopes of protecting our community.

We want to create a solid collection of weather data accurate to our region in Kamloops. This will help in future community planning and understanding of urban weather patterns.

For example, a mine has recently been proposed just outside the boundary area of Kamloops and there has been a great deal of debate as to the environmental impacts it will have on the city. The monitoring of meteorological patterns within the urban area can act as an indicator if any negative change is occurring, and the resulting magnitude.
Currently, there is a weather station located at TRU that has historically been used for research and teaching purposes. However, it is now outdated and no longer functioning properly.

                                                The current TRU weather station.
New research equipment for the University would provide reliable data, which would be operated by trained faculty at the University, and available for students in training.
By having your support, we can achieve together a real time system to monitor our environment and provide the tools for future hands on learning for students at Thompson Rivers University.

What We Need & What You Get

Our goal is $500.00 but we are aiming to raise $10,500.00. This will go towards site updates and repairs consisting of much needed landscaping, general maintenance to existing equipment, and the addition of a remotely accessible data logger, which will cost approximately $500.00. In addition, we want to purchase a radiometer to measure energy inputs and outputs and can be used to monitor changes in atmospheric pollution levels. Depending on the quality of this piece of equipment the cost can range from $1500.00 to $10,000.00. Also, we would like to acquire an air quality monitor which typically cost approximately $5,000.00.

                                                                  Radiometer
Our initial funds will go towards the $500.00 in updates, with additional funds being put towards a radiometer. Any remaining funds will go towards the purchase of an air quality monitor and future research projects.

Our Aim

  • Protect environment and quality of life.
  • Provide reliable data/research with open and easy access for the public.
  • Ensure accountability for industry and commercial.
  • Provide a basis for future work, research and learning.
  • Maintain current and reliable equipment for valuable results.

Risks & Challenges

The only risk is that we do not achieve our goal.
