News and reports were circulating online in the June this year about the uncertain situations on the ground even months after the earthquake had struck Nepal in April. My friend, Yuan Yi, and I then had decided to travel through Nepal in August, 2015, to see how we could help improve the situation. Our findings on the ground itself confirmed what we had seen in the reports before this; that there are inefficiencies and political hurdles that continue to hinders the smooth recovery of the Nepalese lives. That was when our journey for understanding changed into a personal mission for the people of Nepal.
OUR MISSION
We have met with one of the key local Non-Governmental Organisation, Nepalese Volunteers Council, who were kind enough to brief us on the day to day situation in Kathmandu and the surrounding areas. With their help also, we managed to visit close to 5 sizeable makeshift refugee tent areas that still houses families who have lost their homes to the earthquake. Through our conversation in all of these places, we came to realise that their immediate concern is the coming harsh winter period. They are sleeping on basic canvas sheets on the ground with no insulation to protect themselves from the unforgiving cold in the coming months. This is why their concerns have become our most top priority mission right now.
WHAT WE NEED
Within a 10m x 10m tent, there could be up to 3 families living in it (approximately 11 occupants). As such, we are aiming to purchase from a local dealer in Kathmandu a 3m x 3m high quality blanket to keep them warm. Each blanket will cost us $10 and every single family will need minimally at least 2 blankets to be sufficiently kept warm in this winter given their average family sizes. We will distribute these blankets accordingly to the family sizes ourselves for the purpose of fair distribution.
HOW CAN YOU ALSO HELP
If you are not able to support our initiative financially, we hope that you will consider Nepal for your next overseas adventure. Being heavily reliant on the tourism industry, their economy continues to suffer a slow recovery this year as a result of the plummeting numbers of tourist arriving in Kathmandu.
You can also spread the world around to your families and friends about this initiative so that we can meaningfully and collectively help those who are in need the most.
REWARDS
Because of the nature of this initiative, we are not able to provide any substantial reward but that does not mean we do not think you still deserve any! Which is why we have decided to take a Poloroid photo of each recipient family with their blankets and ask them to write a Thank You message on the back of the Poloroid for you. So, not only will you be at peace knowing that you are keeping some Nepalese family warm in this coming winter but you will also receive a personally hand written message from them too.
CHALLENGE
Surprisingly, the key challenge actually lies in the social perception of the general public. We say this because for most people, Nepal might sound like an obsolete news to them already since it has been months since the earthquake. On top of that, other global issues such as the Syrian refugee crisis is also dominating the global media in this moment.
As such, our main challenge is to convince the unconvinced that Nepal still needs our attention and deserves all the help that they can get.
