Short Summary
In June of 2006 I drove out to a local amateur race track in Lake Mills, WI, to shoot some interviews with female racers. Within an hour I had met a 9-year-old little girl sitting in a lawn chair drinking a Red Bull, a brown henna tattoo of the number "05" on her upper right arm - it was Charlotte Kainz.
That day led to over three years of filming Charlotte and other female competitors at local dirt tracks in the Midwest where the possibility of pro-racing is realized by young girls riding with their peers and watching their idols defy convention and expectation.
On September 25th of 2016, we lost Charlotte Kainz when she crashed on the final day of her first season as a Professional Flat Track Racer. Charlotte turned 20 just days before that race in Santa Rosa and was emerging as a formidable competitor in the American Flat Track Pro series with a fearlessness and grace that was contagious.
Through never before seen archives, interviews with motorcycle legends (Malcolm Smith, Mert Lawwill, Jay Springsteen, Bubba Shobert, and Scott Parker), professional racers (Shayna Textor, Nichole Mees, Morgan Monroe), family members, officials and sponsors, the film shares the experience of competitive riding in a way that will transform how we think about sport and culture, the power of love and loss, and the risks and rewards of living a fearless life.
Angels Of Dirt will share and celebrate a new generation making their mark in the amateur and professional race industry.
This campaign (15% of our overall final budget) has Three Main Goals:
1. Completing interviews - (about a dozen) and other shooting to support the story.
2. Logging and transcribing - 80 hours of footage.
3. Editing / Research / Production Personnel - Hiring the most qualified staff is critical and will enable the film to be completed on schedule.
WHERE I AM NOW
I took a break from the film in 2008 to work on another film that took 7 years to complete. That project ended in the late 2016, just about the time of Charlotte's death. My decision to take Angels Of Dirt off the shelf and begin finishing the film was immediate. And having the opportunity to honor the life of Charlotte would be both a challenge and a gift.
The last film I directed, I raised $120,000 using a crowdfunding platform similar to Indiegogo. Expanding the community connected to the film provides the project with an important element of accountability and support - It means everything.
Community meant everything to Charlotte and it's the foundation that many racers need to explore and pursue their endeavors. Your participation is part of that.
My first two documentaries taught me how to manage and prioritize time and resources. This is the third feature-length film that will utilize a small and capable staff with diverse production skills - we are already working hard but we need your support.
Risks & Challenges
Adequate and accessible resources are central to a film's success. Editing, shooting, producing, accounting, and researching are ongoing and demanding areas of production and bringing in strong, committed support in those areas is key to keeping a project on schedule and budget.
