We are a group of residents and cycling enthusiasts inspired to spread awareness, safety and the love for biking in Bridgeport, CT.

The Bikeport Co-op is a community development bike program. Bikeport replicates the “earn-a-bike” program model, where youth can earn bikes by attending bike safety and maintenance courses and performing volunteer hours with various local organizations. Bikeport works to break the cycle of poverty and violence in low income youth by teaching them about bikes, engaging youth on a personal level, providing structured after school activities, and giving youth the chance to earn and own a valuable tool for alternative transportation while making a difference in their community.

Bikeport is working to make Bridgeport a better biking community by improving the quality of biking experience in the City. Bikeport is working with the local government and officials to install bike racks when we are able to acquire them. Bikeport will work to enact safe biking measures in Bridgeport such as complete streets, night lighting, and proper road etiquette.

As part of Bridgeport Bike Month, our first big program, we held 23 events in the month of July, including group rides, bike art events, bike maintenance and safety events, and social media events. Bike Month netted 180 collective group miles ridden, and 132 volunteer hours committed. 12 Bridgeport youth will be receiving bikes, bike locks, and helmets as part of the earn-a-bike program.

We are asking the community to fund our project for $2500 so we can buy items for our new workshop and for programming. These items include: helmets, bike locks, spare tires, bike lights, workshop tools, wood to make workbenches, work gloves, bike stands, and much more!
