About the Film
Remy is a young man in his 20s, a scientist and inventor who is heart broken after his now ex-girlfriend Jin is seen with another man. To get back at Jin, Remy masterminds a prank on her father’s Korean owned beauty supply store. With the help of his roommate Zakia and brother Mavo, it escalates from a prank to a heist worth thousands of dollars in hair extensions. This sets off a series of events as the only beauty supply store is forced to close down, leaving people desperate for hair products. Remy’s newest innovation was originally created for his brother Mavo the barber. However, when his formula reacts with his roommate Zakia’s human hair extensions, Remy accidently has a breakthrough! He creates his first hair product. In this comedy, Remy goes from having only one girlfriend; to becoming the ladies’ man, with his newly found aphrodisiac, “Brazilian Wavy”. This new power over weave-aholics consumes Remy, and his dreams of creating a business and giving back to the community become much less of a priority. It’s only a matter of time that the ripple effect of a shortage of hair products in the neighborhood, comes back to bite him.
What We Need & What You Get
Though $20,000 is no small favor to ask of you, it does make for a small budget. Film is a collaborative medium and working with professional Actors and crew can add up very quickly.
The plan is to submit to film festivals before releasing online for a wider audience. This short comes from a feature version of the film.
what do I get out of it?
Whatever you are able to contribute is appreciated. In exchange for your support, you can stake your claim on this production with one of the many perks shown to the right.
The Impact
This story matters because it's rare that we see a story of a young man that uses his talent in science , not just to better himself but also his community.
Too many times we only see the "Single Story" of people of color and that has divisive effect that only focuses on how we are different.
Essentially what the"Single Story" is: show a people as only one thing over and over again and that is what they become (Chimamanda Adichie).
The world has a "Single Story" of people of color. If all you knew about people of color is of the popular images, then you too would think that every person of color was a freak of nature athleticly, who commits all the violent crimes, and that they don't take care of their kids. Or the incomprehensive eye-witness that every news outlet chooses to give their commentary as to what happend at the crime scene.
Who tells the stories, how they are told, and how many stories get told have always been determined by the power structure. Until now, with your contrubution we can tell stories that can empower and humanize, stories that are universal and show how we are more alike then different. Stories matter! Join me so we can harness the grassroots energy that will make this story come to life.
