Desktop Density brings the concept of density to your desktop. The concept is brought to life with 10mm cubes of metallic elements. Each cube of specially selected metallic elements provides a wide range of contrasting densities.

Desktop density was created to bring the concept of density to your desktop. The 9 x 10mm elemental cubes were specially selected to perfectly display the concept of density. A custom CNC base was designed to display the cubes alongside a mini-scale to compare each element.

The project was first imagined in June 2021. After a few months, we decided to get started on CAD modelling and sample parts. We used AutoCAD to generate 3D models and 3D printed each part. We decided on a precision machined base and miniature 10mm cubes to create a palm-size product.

Each element is laser etched with its respective atomic number, symbol, density and atomic radius. The whole set can be placed directly into one hand as shown below.

The design stage was completed with CAD software. The 10mm elemental cubes were designed to match the parent material and embossed with laser engraved markings.

The CNC machined base was then designed to fit all nine elemental cubes. An assembly was then created to show a visual of the assembled parts.

The custom-designed base was 3D printed to ensure a secure fit and confirm the design for manufacture. The designed part had to be altered slightly for manufacture. The 3D printed part consisted of rectangular slots for each cube, in reality, this was not possible and a 0.5mm radius had to be incorporated into the design.

Desktop Density was created by metal enthusiasts based in Glasgow, UK. The team have worked in engineering R&D / material science roles in Glasgow and Edinburgh. This project is our first Kickstarter campaign and if successful, we hope to release follow-up projects of a similar style.
Risks and challenges
The initial design included sharp corners in the CNC machined base. A 0.5mm radius was required to complete machining successfully.
Long-lasting design
The solid metal parts are designed to last a lifetime.
Reusability and recyclability
Eco-friendly packaging will be used to export each Desktop Density purchase.
Sustainable Distribution
Each package is lightweight and postbox size. This will minimise the environmental impact of delivery.
