Who are we?
We are a group of 14 youths (aged 18 to 26) from Singapore who one day decided to make good on our desire to take service learning beyond our privileged geographical contours. The social issues prevalent in India are vastly different
from those we face in Singapore, and thus we are embarking on this adventure to make friends with the people there, serve the community, and build sustainable relationships so as to drive long term positive change.
We will be going to Manali and Delhi, places where we have existing local contacts, which would help greatly in facilitating our pioneering trip there.
'GO' stands for 'Global Outreach, and GO Projects is the umbrella under which our team initiates service trips to different parts of the world. GO India 2014 is the
first of many future trips to India; in the past
our members have embarked on GO Projects to other countries such as the
Philippines.
Why do we need your help?
As a pioneer project that is run and funded entirely by students, we are very much dependent on financial support. We will be working together with Youth With A Mission (YWAM) (http://ywamdelhi.com), a non-profit organisation already serving the needs of the Indian community and would be able to advise us on how we can serve alongside them.
Some of the activities that we would be engaged in over there include:
- Conducting a vacation school for children from the lower income community where we will be teaching them basic conversational English, Geography, Science, and Arts & Crafts
- Painting a mural in Ashish Children's Home
-
Raising awareness of the ill effects of drug abuse as the consumption and trade of illegal drugs are huge social issues
- Providing basic first aid and medical attention (e.g. bandaging, antiseptic, anti-inflammatory ointment etc) for people living in the slums of Delhi
- Helping to feed malnourished children living in the slums
-
Christmas caroling and celebrations at various orphanages and senior citizens' homes to spread Christmas cheer
While some of us may live on a $30 weekly budget, many of the families in the slums are surviving on a $30 combined monthly family income.
How much?
We are looking to raise $5000 to cover our project costs, and purchase materials for the above programmes that we will be organizing. The more donations we receive, the more ambitious we can be with the scope of help we wish to render while we are in India.
We are immensely grateful for any amount you would like to donate.
