In sub-Saharan Africa, it is estimated that 70% of the population does not have access to reliable grid power (UN 2013).  This means that in many cases the doors to learning, healthcare, business and agriculture are closed, resulting in economic hardship and dependence on first world support.  In addition, the reliance on fossil fuels becomes enormous, as fossil fuels are used for power generation, heating, lighting and cooking.  Apart from the environmental and health damage caused by the use of these fossil fuels, the rising costs and lack of availability of these fuels further inhibit the development of basic services and community self-reliance.  Why this reliance on fossil fuels in the part of the world that has the highest average daily sunshine in the world?

The Solution
