About the Play
The festival's critique of the play said: “A crisply written, fun, campy look at a serious issue, that makes its point. The playwright knows how to write dialogue and land a joke...”.
How can a play about climate change be funny?
First you set it in South Florida where the citizens are so deep in denial they'll boil like the proverbal frog before giving up their Maseratis. Mix in something gross like a septic tank pushed out of the ground, an alcoholic climate researcher, absentee Russian condo owners and a homeless wandering gun nut. How can it be anything but funny?
Sea Level Rise is intended to spearhead theater’s entry into the climate change conversation.
About the Playwright
This is Henry Feldman’s second climate change play. His first, "Global Warming: A Comedy," was recently workshopped at the Key City Public Theatre’s 2019 Playfest in Port Townsend, Washington.
As Mr. Feldman grew interested in climate change science and activism, he recognized that “scientists are sucky at communicating.” He believes strongly that the arts, and particularly theatrical comedy, should be instrumental in educating the public and inspiring action. He says, “Funny is what I write, and funny is what I decided it would take to get an audience to pay money to see a climate change play.”
About the Director
Ted Thompson returns as a director for his second season with the Broadway Bound Theatre Festival having directed last season's thriller Nowhere Man by Rob Dames. He has been directing for nearly two decades now a wide range of plays from comedy (The Sunshine Boys) to drama (Death of a Saleman) at venues ranging from the Brooklyn Heights Players to Theater for a New City. He has directed two plays by Lynn Nottage of which she said his direction was "sensitive and nuanced" (N.Y. Times Aug 24, 2018) He is especially pleased at the Broadway Bound Festival to be able to work with playwrights on new and contemporary works.
The Give and Get
Your contributions will go toward the expends of hiring actors, a director, stage manager, and sound designer. There will be props and set pieces including a broken septic tank! There’s the rent for rehearsal space, a fabulous poster, PR, and so on. And even when everyone is getting paid what is a criminally low hourly rate, it adds up.
We have some great merch for you! T-shirts, mugs, and posters – take your pick. (Burdened by too many worldly possessions already? You can contribute without selecting a perk.)
The Broadway Bound Theatre Festival is the first step toward getting "Sea Level Rise: A Dystopian Comedy" in front of audiences! Your support can help it succeed at the festival and go on to a standalone run.
