THE FILM
'Sad Dad' is a darkly satirical exploration of "hipster" aging, the alienation of creative work and the cultural prejudices of white liberal gentrification. The film is thematically dense, yet woven into a tightly constructed story that leads the viewer on a compelling and twisted journey.
You can read the first 4 pages of the script here.
THE IDEA
Written by author Josh Rosenblatt and myself, 'Sad Dad' began as a text message joke. I sent Josh a picture of "mumblecore" writer/actor/director Marc Duplass looking sad. Josh wrote a quick fictionalized response that described the picture. The story was bleak, funny and unexpectedly poignant. I suggested we build it into a script together. The writing process quickly became very personal for both of us. The script addressed issues related to our age, our creative lives in Brooklyn and to my life as a husband/father living in the socio-economically divided neighborhood of Bed Stuy. "Marc" evolved from a text-message joke into something much more.
THE PRODUCTION
This is my third crowd-sourced film as a writer/director. The first, 'there's hope but not for us,' was selected to screen at the Las Vegas Indie Fest. The second, 'Vows', was the Audience Award winner at the New Directors/New Films summer series at Anthology Film Archives.
My current director's reel can be seen here.
THE CAMPAIGN
Sad Dad is being funded almost entirely by this crowdfund campaign. Your contribution will go towards every aspect of the production, including:
- Fees for the cast and crew
- Equipment rentals (camera, lenses, lights, tripod, handheld stabilizer, slider, tripod, etc.)
- Food for full cast and crew
- Post-production costs (color correction, film festival submission fees)
YOUR CONTRIBUTION
With your help, this production will have a 15-person cast and crew of paid professionals working with all the necessary equipment and amenities.
THE DEADLINE - AUGUST 2018
I need to secure financing for this film by the end of the summer and shoot in early fall. My goal is to have a rough edit completed by the end October, just in time for the 2019 film festival submission cycle. The quicker I reach my budget goal, the quicker I can get started on securing cast, crew and shooting dates.
Thanks for your help!
