The Project
This could be the last opportunity to save the nationally known and Historic US 30 dragstrip in Hobart, Indiana (formerly addressed in Gary)I have a signed agreement with the owner to purchase a large section of the US 30 Dragstrip property. Enough land to have a 1/8th mile dragstrip with approximately a 1,400 shut down area. This area includes the old Tower area, pit area, parking area and grandstands.
US 30 Drag strip has always been a family oriented facility.
A place where Fathers and Mothers worked side by side with their children, where friends bonded working on each others cars in the pits. A place where people came on
dates to watch the races. There are probably millions of people who have
fond memories of their times at US 30 Dragstrip.
The current property owner has been entertaining offers from developers for residential and industrial usage, which made me realize I had to step in and do everything possible to save the Dragstrip from being destroyed forever.
Please not this campaign ends on July 30th, 2016.
What will be proposed to the City for approval:
The following will be included in the Proposal to the
City of Hobart (again it is our proposal and has not been approved).
The standard elements of our proposal are:
A.
A 1/8th mile track
B. One weekend day for open racing
C.
Friday evening open Test and Tune times
D. Large open sided shelters with picnic tables to give relief from the hot sun with misting stations.
Our proposal also consists of 3 unprecedented elements in
Drag Racing.
1.
Garage Condominiums from oversized 1 ½ car and larger in
an enclosed secure area next to the pits with a keypad to open the driveway
gate and secured wrought iron type of fencing. They could be heated and air
conditioned with a lift. It is a great opportunity to have some place to store
your race car, work on it 365 days a year in a temperature controlled
environment. There is also over 2 blocks of land the owner wants to sell as light industrial which will mean 20' to 25' tall concrete block constrution buildings for blocks between the track and the houses at the west end. Concrete buildings make a great sound barrier.
2.
Exclusive Memberships for weekday Test
and Tune (proposed 4pm to 8pm) Numerous other sports have country club membership which allow
its members special exclusive benefits, such as Golf Course Country Clubs, so
why not for Drag Racing? We will propose Test and Tune days on Tuesday,
Wednesday and Thursday. Individuals can
purchase memberships for any of the three days which will provide them access
to the dragstrip on that weekday every week the tract is open. We will only
offer a limited number of memberships to allow each racer to have an estimated
6 runs each day.
3.
League Team Racing on One weekend day. Get a group of 5
racers and form your own Drag Racing Team. Team racing will race against other
teams with each winner advancing to the next run. It will be run based on
selected ET with standard rules for red lighting and break outs, there will be
no buy buys in League Racing. Winning Teams will receive weekly Trophies with
an end of the year Banquet. You can design your own Team Shirts, car decals,
logos, etc. There will be a limited number of Teams spots available.
What I am Not Proposing:
I am not proposing Top Fuel Dragstrers/Funny Cars with over 9,000
horsepower (that's 10 times the horse power of most of the bracket race
cars we expect at the dragstrip) and they are much, much louder. This
will eliminate a lot of the noise issues homeowners might be concerned
about.
I am not proposing national events that will attract Tens of Thousands of spectators. I am proposing a local dragstrip where people can have fun with their family and friends. This will also eliminate and/or greatly reduce potential traffic congestion that homeowners might be worried about.
What We Need/What You Get
Risks & Challenges
If we do not raise enough money to purchase the parcel of land under contract or if acceptable terms can not be reached with the City there is Plan B:
While this will not allow anyone to race on the property I have discussed the ability of purchasing the front 10 acres fronting on Clay Street which would include the starting line, pit and tower area, etc. There is no way that 10 acres is sufficient to ever race on, but it provides the ability of saving the most important part of the land.. If the amount raised doesn't meet the requirement for Plan B, then Plan C is to have a Documentary produced on the History of US 30 Dragstrip with video interviews with as many of the top names and popular racers from it's Glory days as possible if there is enough money raised to cover it.
Whether you are someone that would like to see the track reopened or someone who just wants it to remain as it is a memory that you can drive by and look down the track remember, this could be the last chance to save the property from becoming another industrial or residential development. With the track torn up and warehouses, office buildings or homes built on the land US 30 Dragstrip could be another racetrack that died in the name of progress.
