a story about a potato
An innocent potato tries to understand the world around him as he is picked and sold into a new home, flipping his life upside down. SPUD as a character experiences a number of difficult situations and his naivety towards change ultimately forms the brunt of the story. The childishness of Spud and the overall absurdity of the project are key themes that we as filmmakers will be relying on closely
As a period piece, set in the 1930's SPUD is a film about overcoming change and difficult times, with the poor family that purchases SPUD ultimately having to rise above change just as the potato has to. The story is narrated by Spud's much older self and adds a real human element to the project, by giving us an insight into the mind of our main character.
SPUD reflects closely with the art-house genre, whilst still maintaining comedic and dramatic elements.
Having only a small amount of private investment already, crowdfunding was the obvious choice for our film. Having a strong script and a dedicated crew on board all we need now is the funds to make SPUD a reality.
We want to make Spud the best it can be and that means that some of our production needs to be paid for and not simply begged, borrowed or stolen from people we know. We need to be able to dress our sets properly and feed our crew. This is why we are crowdfunding; so that we can create SPUD the right way and give it the attention to detail and truthfulness it deserves.
This is where you come in!
On the right of this page you can see a whole bunch of different perks that you can chose from that will help us reach our goal, or even just pressing the ‘contribute now’ button and donating whatever you can will help.
We have tried to make interesting rewards that we ourselves would be interested in and hope that the community will be inclined to help us out in making this film a reality.
Reid Malseed (Writer & Director)
As writer & director of SPUD I feel very strongly about making the film properly. Starting off as a joke and a dare to write a 'vegetable perspective' film script, SPUD kind of came out of nowhere and became something I really did not expect. Now we are in the ever-exciting pre-production stage and we are going to need a lot of help getting through shooting and post-production. We do have a strong team though and we are all dedicated to making this little potato a star.
I am very confident that SPUD will surprise and intrigue a wide audience and can't wait to share the finished product with you all.
Stephanie Groves (Producer)
I am the producer of SPUD and it is my job to make sure that the film gets made efficiently and to the best of our abilities. I fell in love with this script because of its simplistic innocence while still give the audience something important to think about. I hope to be able to help bring SPUD to life and showcase all of the amazing talent that is going into the production.
Jordan Agius (Production Design & Art Department)
I’m the production designer for ‘Spud’, and in charge of the art department side of the film. As the film’s story is strongly represented symbolically it’s my job to best capture and represent the essence of SPUD. I loved this story; its unique take on interesting issues is both truthful and absurd in its nature and I wish to visually represent these qualities as best I can. The style of the film will be part Art house as well as part satirical comment on art house within film. Much of what we’ll see onscreen is reflective of Spud’s emotions, inner thoughts and his journey.
As members of the filmmaking community, as well as avid audience members ourselves we understand the importance of transparency to the crowdfunding process.
The majority of our costs will be split between production design, costuming and feeding the crew. But also include things like travel costs as well as makeup supplies and equipment hire.
Please see below for a full breakdown of our budget.
Equipment Hire - $200 (14%)
Travel - $200 (14%)
Set Design & Wardrobe - $500 (36%)
Catering - $250 (18%)
Contingency - $100 (7%)
Indiegogo & Rewards - $150 (11%)
Total - $1400
Alternatively, if you cannot donate yourself share this page
on your social media accounts and let your friends and family now about our
campaign. That way we can share our
story with a wider audience and get the attention of people who love our film
as much as we do.
The whole crew is very appreciative of every $1 or every share and we would just like to say thank you. We wouldn’t be able to make our film without your help and we appreciate all of your donations and shares.
