Sun Camp
Children with Down syndrome need and want friends, but this can be very difficult when you have trouble talking, or when one of your parents has to come with you to help facilitate activities. For the siblings of children with DS, it's frustrating to have to explain or answer questions about their brother or sister all of the time.
Sun Camp is an inclusive day camp for children with Down syndrome (DS) and their siblings that focuses on friendships. Currently located in Palo Alto, California, Sun Camp, operating since 2013, includes siblings by design, and focuses on fostering reciprocal, balanced, long-term friendships for all campers. Sun Camp provides a place of acceptance for all children where they can have fun and be themselves. It gives them the support needed to be successful in connecting with other children.
The staffing level (counselor to camper ration of 1:1 or 1:2) enables us to serve campers with high levels of need, as well as children who have a profile similar to Down syndrome, such as chromosome deletion. We are excited to be able to welcome these families who may not otherwise have a community of support or be able to find programs that accept their children.
Please donate to help keep camp accessible to families with children with Down syndrome. Brothers and sisters get to share experiences in a positive environment. Campers get more out of it every time—more fun, more playdates, and more true friends. These effects impact families far beyond the duration of Sun Camp. The relationships formed through Sun Camp enrich children's lives throughout the year.
Sun Camp is fiscally sponsored by Social Good Fund, a tax-deductible 501c3 nonprofit organization. Your donation is tax-deductible.
