Short Summary

My name is Trey Garcia, and I am a survivor of POTS and Narcolepsy. I am an Indiginous MFA student filmmaker, and this project is aimed towards addressing the medical system for all of its strange behavior while celebrating validation and acceptance for whatever we have to go through.

The Best Medicine is a film about a man trying to get his medication for the day while ruminating how he will reveal his condition to his partner. His imagination and overthinking gets the better of him, and he envisions his day through the lens of a 1950's PSA, exposing all the flaws and quirks of the life of a chronic illness patient.

In a Post-Covid era, I believe chronic illness and disability is a topic that can resonate with all of us who have felt like our lives were halted by medical crisis. This film is intended to:

Let people caught in the system that their frustrations are valid and they are not alone

Offer hope to anyone who feels like they are not enough or don't deserve happiness because of things outside of their control

Create awareness for people outside of that environment so we can start a dialogue about the medical system

Create laughter from any pain or frustration cause by health issues in our lives

What We Need & What You Get

We need funding because as a physically disabled person, I am unable to raise and save money myself. This story addresses this issue in some fashion, and I believe spreading awareness about this is important. I have made several short films by myself with no funding, so The funding will exclusively go towards the immersion within the film and pay for things like:

Production Design

Equipment

Gas and Food for Cast and Crew

Costuming

Location fees

Post Production Graphics and Music

Any leftover funding will go towards distribution of the film so it can be seen by as many people as possible.

Any amount of money provided is extremely appreciated as you are supporting a topic and people group the is often disregarded.

Any funding of $100 or more will result in a credit in the film.

Risks & Challenges

The risk here is that I am freely admitting that I am disabled, which may discourage you to fund the project. This journey has been long and hard, but it is precisely because I have overcome those challenges that you should feel that I am capable. The challenges of this project are all related to execution, but I am confident that this is the time that I have been waiting for to overcome them.

  • I have spent the last 4 years as a freelance editor for multiple organizations such as The Positive Identity and San Jose State
  • I have over 3 years of semi professional acting experience, allowing me to effectively communicate with the actors in the project
  • I have spent the last 6 months fine tuning the script with many talented professors at SFSU
  • I have over 3 years of Broadcasting and Live Shooting experience, directing the Online Services at The Bay Church
  • I have self- directed, written, and shot multiple short silent comedic films, all of which were done with less resources than I currently have

Other Ways You Can Help
