A revolution is taking place in development aid.

During the past five years, a revolution took place in the world of development aid: micro-finance platforms enabled everyone to participate directly in development aid by giving small loans to micro-entrepreneurs. Today, micro-finance platforms provide poor people in developing countries with thousands of chances - weekly. We're introducing the next shift in this development: the Goodvestment. The Goodvestment puts development aid organizations, who are taking the poor by the hand, teaching and empowering them, in the center of its programs. With your support, Project GAIN wants to rapidly shift thousands of people out of poverty, with a self-sustainable solution that increases in transparency, fairness and reward.

How can we make development aid more focused and much more effective?

Today, more than a billion people suffer from poverty. It is hard to understand what that means for a family unless you have seen it yourself. Just take a look at Sub-Saharan Africa: after 50 years of development assistance, saying that there is still a lot of work to do would be a mere understatement. What it takes is more focused, sustainable and much more scalable support. The alleviation of poverty depends on the poor reaching financial self-sustainability. 

We were asking ourselves if we could build something that would shift spendings in the direction of the most innovative and prolific development aid organizations, while increasing the impact on the alleviation of poverty. We sat down, worked on it for three years, assembled a team and an advisory board consisting of aid pros, and refined the concept. Then we travelled to Africa to further work on it with local aid pros and micro-entrepreneurs. The result of our work is the Goodvestment.

The Goodvestment is an advance in the way we help people. This is how it works.

Project GAIN puts aid organizations through comprehensive due diligence and accountability checks, and hand-picks only the most groundbreaking and well-established ones. Together, we set up programs that are directed towards rapidly and sustainably alleviating poverty by shifting poor micro-entrepreneurs into financial self-sustainability. Most poor people are self-employed or run small businesses like a shop or a small farm - that's why we call them micro-entrepreneurs. Sadly, these businesses often don't suffice for their needs for food, water, sanitation, healthcare and education. The programs that Project GAIN and the development aid organizations set up help these people leapfrog out of poverty by systematically training and educating them, organizing them in groups that are able to help themselves and providing them with sustainable market links to make sure they have options to buy from and to sell to. These are some of the fastest, most innovative (yet tested) programs out there today, and we are happy to help multiply these efforts. Read on to find out how. 

To increase the impact, the aid organizations assist the micro-entrepreneurs in applying for a small loan on project-gain.com, with a picture and a short description of their project (i.e. acquiring seeds, drying grids and storage space for scaling a small farm). Interesting fact: the costs for the development programs can be split into two parts: education and goods (seeds for example), the latter easily amounting for a tenfold of the former. We cut out the costs for the goods and turn them into a Goodvestment. As a result, the aid organizations are able to concentrate their limited funds on educating and assisting the micro-entrepreneurs. The power of the crowd now enables them to scale their efforts to a multitude of people, massively increasing the impact on the alleviation of poverty.

First of all, you are going to witness families leapfrog out of poverty. This is a unique experience: From your first glance at the project details and pictures to updates during the process, to receiving a confirmation at the completion of the project, you are going to actually see the impact your Goodvestment has. The micro-entrepreneurs are able to reap large revenues from their participation in the programs, often in the multiple hundreds of percents of their loans. Thus, with the repayment of your Goodvestment, you even receive a small monetary reward. You get a great experience that you can share with your friends and family. And you get to reuse the money to help the next micro-entrepreneur right away - let's call it 'aid recycling'.

Are there microfinance middlemen involved in the disbursement or repayment of the Goodvestment?

No. We only work together with our well-established development aid partners. We do have our own ground staff to supervise the operations, but if you are asking for the 'usual' microfinance institutions acting as middlemen adding interest, applying pressure, charging fees, disconnecting the micro-entrepreneurs from you etc.: no, never. This is and stays at the core of our project. Promised.

Are you guys a Not-For-Profit NGO?

No. We think we've found a much better model for our task. Please see 'Social Venture? What's that all about?' for details.

Do the development aid organizations receive a share of the Goodvestment or the fees?

No. They receive something much more valuable: growth. If you are a development aid organization, you are most likely to be dependent on donations for funding your operations. There is one thing that can help you receive more funds: success. Scaling your operations to a tenfold of people, for instance. The beautiful thing: if you work in a development aid organization, it also makes you happy.

How are you different than the micro-finance platforms out there?

There are a lot of ways in which we differ from other initiatives. Here's a selection:

 1. The money you invest in a Goodvestment on project-gain.com goes directly to the micro-entrepreneur of your choice. That's called peer-to-peer lending. We make sure the participating micro-entrepreneurs are aware that the money is coming from you.

2. We work together with development aid organizations instead of microfinance companies for the support of the participants. This protects them from paying additional interest, which the microfinance companies charge, and which are often in the high double-digit range. The participants don't have to put up the common collateral they could lose. Plus, the organizations help them realize their projects by educating them, taking them by the hand, organizing them in cooperatives, and by providing them with market links. 

3. As a social venture, we are financially independent from donations. This means that you don't have to 'give' twice, once to the micro-entrepreneur and once to us. We sustain on a small fee, which the participants can easily pay, because they are able to reap a multiple in profits from their Goodvestments ('no-harms fee'). The fee enables us to pay for the transactions, running the website and everything else, because we are working with a very narrow business model. At the same time, the social venture model is a bet on ourselves: opposite to a not-for-profit organization, which is able to sustain its operation from donations even if it does not work well, our idea has to function, because our success is directly linked to that of our participants. 

4. The micro-entrepreneurs provide you with rich feedback during the projects, in the form on text and pictures, so that you can see exactly what impact your Goodvestment has.

How does Project GAIN make sure that my Goodvestment returns?

Let us be honest with you: in the realm of finance, there is no absolute security, nowhere. Luckily, the repayment rates of micro-loans are much higher than those of conventional loans, steadily close to 100%. But we wanted to improve on that, too. So we set up a thorough no-harms security system that has been applauded by our experienced partners in the field. It combines social factors (i.e. group support rather than group pressure) with behavioral economics (imagine for example split amounts of money that are not worth running off with), background checks (we are able to identify those who really want to shift their lives) and - last but not least - taking the people by the hand and giving them in-depth trainings.

This security system is based on trust-building and empowerment rather than mistrust and pressure. And it's tried and tested. This system alone will do well in securing the loans. On top of it, just to make sure everything is super-safe, we are building an anti-default trust, which will help us to cover even for the few defaults that might happen over time. Because we want to make sure that your money returns safely. 

Social Venture? What's that all about?

Well, a social venture is basically a self-sustainable aid organization. Or a company with a strictly social mission, if you look at it from the other side. It is independent from donations. If it is a good social venture, it tries to a) live off a very narrow margin (ours is way below the cost ratio of most Not-For-Profit NGOs operating in our sector) and b) uses its profits to scale its efforts, which is exactly how we work. For what we do, we believe to know after extensive research and evaluation, ours is the best model. This way we don't have to 'ask' you to give us money on top of the money you spend for the Goodvestment. That is confusing and unnecessary. By being a social venture and applying our business model, we also take a bet on our idea, because our survival is directly linked to the success of the participating micro-entrepreneurs. One more thing: we make sure that the profits the micro-entrepreneurs make in our programs exceed the small fee by far, so that it is and stays a no-harms fee.

Das Goodvestment ist eine neue Form des crowd-finanzierten investments, das sozial Gutes tut. Es ermöglicht es dir, Menschen aus der Armut zu verhelfen, indem sie finanzielle Selbstständigkeit erreichen. Gemeinsam ermöglichen wir es großartigen Entwicklungshilfeorganisationen, ihre innovativen Programme auf ein Vielfaches von Menschen auszuweiten. Gleichzeitig bringen wir dich näher an die Menschen, denen du hilfst, als konventionelle Spenden.

Die Entwicklungshilfe erlebt eine Revolution.

In den letzten fünf Jahren hat die Welt der Entwicklungshilfe eine Revolution erlebt: Mikrofinanz-Plattformen erlauben es jedermann, durch kleine Kredite für Mikro-Unternehmer direkt an Entwicklungshilfe teilzunehmen. Heute versorgen Mikrofinanz-Plattformen Menschen in Entwicklungsländern mit tausenden Chancen - wöchentlich. Wir stellen die nächste Stufe in dieser Entwicklung vor: das Goodvestment. Das Goodvestment stellt Entwicklungshilfe-Organisationen, die die Armen an die Hand nehmen und sie ausbilden, ins Zentrum seiner Programme. Mit deiner Unterstützung möchte Project GAIN tausende Menschen aus der Armut befreien, mit einer nachhaltigen Lösung, mit mehr Transparent, Fairness und Belohnung.

Wie können wir Entwicklungshilfe fokussierter und effektiver gestalten?

Heute leiden mehr als eine Milliarde Menschen unter Armut. Es ist schwierig, zu verstehen was das bedeutet, wenn man es nicht selbst gesehen hat. Ein gutes Beispiel ist Subsahara-Afrika: nach 50 Jahren Entwicklungshilfe wäre die Aussage, dass es noch viel zu tun gibt, pure Untertreibung. Benötigt wird konzentriertere, nachhaltigere und viel besser skalierbare Unterstützung. Die Bekämpfung von Armut hängt davon ab, ob die Armen der Welt finanzielle Selbstständigkeit erreichen können.

Wir haben uns gefragt, ob wir etwas schaffen können, das Gelder in Richtung der innovativsten und bewährtesten Entwicklungshilfe-Organisationen lenkt und dabei den Effekt auf die Bekämpfung der Armut verstärkt. Wir haben uns hingesetzt, drei Jahre daran gearbeitet, ein Team und einige Entwicklungshilfe-Profis versammelt und das Konzept verfeinert. Dann sind wir nach Afrika gereist, um es mit lokalen Entwicklungshilfe-Profis und Mikro-Unternehmern weiterzuentwickeln. Das Ergebnis unserer Arbeit ist das Goodvestment.

Das Goodvestment ist ein Fortschritt darin, wie wir Menschen helfen. So funktioniert es.

Project GAIN prüft Hilfsorganisationen auf Herz und Nieren und selektiert nur die innovativsten und bewährtesten. Gemeinsam setzen wir Programme auf, die zügig und nachhaltig Armut bekämpfen, indem sie arme Mikro-Unternehmern in die finanzielle Selbstständigkeit verhelfen. Die meisten armen Menschen sind selbstständig oder haben ein kleines Geschäft, wie einen Laden oder eine kleine Farm - deshalb nennen wir sie Mikro-Unternehmer. Leider reichen diese Geschäfte oft nicht, um ihr Bedürfnis nach Nahrung, Wasser, Hygiene, Gesundheit und Bildung zu decken. Die Programme, die Project GAIN und die Entwicklungshilfe-Organisationen aufsetzen helfen diesen Menschen, zügig aus der Armut zu entwachsen, indem sie systematisch trainiert und gebildet werden, sich in Gruppen organisieren, die sich selbst helfen können, und indem sie mit nachhaltigen Markt-Anbindungen versorgt werden, um sicherzustellen, dass sie Möglichkeiten zum Ein- und Verkauf haben. Es handelt sich um einige der schnellsten, innovativsten (und erprobten) Programme, die derzeit existieren, und wir sind stolz, diese Anstrengungen zu unterstützen. Lies weiter, um herauszufinden, wie. 

Um den Effekt zu erhöhen helfen die Entwicklungshilfe-Partner den Mikro-Unternehmern, sich auf project-gain.com mit einem Bild und einer kurzen Beschreibung ihres Projektes um einen kleinen Kredit zu bewerben (zum Beispiel mit dem Erwerb von Saatgut und Trockengittern zum Vergrößern einer kleinen Farm). Interessanter Fakt: die Kosten für die Entwicklungshilfe-Programme lassen sich in zwei Teile splitten: Bildung und Waren (zum Beispiel Saatgut), wobei letztere locker das Zehnfache des ersteren kosten können. Wir nehmen die Kosten für die Waren und verwandeln sie in ein Goodvestment. Dadurch können die Hilfsorganisationen ihre beschränkten Mittel auf die Bildung und Begleitung der Mikro-Unternehmer konzentrieren. Die Kraft der Crowd ermöglicht es ihnen jetzt, ihre Programme auf ein Vielfaches von Menschen zu skalieren, was den Effekt auf die Bekämpfung der Armut massiv erhöht.

Zunächst einmal wirst du sehen können, wie Familien aus der Armut entwachsen. Das ist eine einzigartige Erfahrung: von deinem ersten Blick auf die Details und Bilder des Projektes über die Updates während des Projektes bis zur Bestätigung des Erfolges am Ende des Projektes wirst du miterleben können, welchen Effekt dein Goodvestment hat. Die Mikro-Unternehmer können durch die Programme hohe Einnahmen erzielen, häufig von vielen hundert Prozent ihrer Kredite. Deshalb erhältst du mit der Rückzahlung deines Goodvestments eine kleine monetäre Belohnung. Du machst eine großartige Erfahrung, die du mit deinen Freunden und deiner Familie teilen kannst.
