Help an Abused Animal
On July 1, 2017, Happy Hearts Feline Rescue experienced their first cruelty case. Volunteers found a cat with injuries requiring immediate medical attention. Kitty was taken to Happy Hearts Feline Rescue for evaluation and the cat was immediately taken to the Emergency Animal Hospital in Ann Arbor.
Due to the nature of this cat's injuries, it was suggested by the examining veterinarian that sexual abuse of this animal was a serious possibly. We believe in doing what is right for all animals that cross our paths and took on this large medical investment to repair the damage inflicted upon this cat by some very disturbed individual. Evander’s prognosis was good so the decision was made to repair the rectum and surrounding cavities. Authorities in the area where the cruelty occurred have been notified and an investigation into identifying the perpetrator and warning the public is in progress. We were influenced to name this sweet orange and white kitty Evander, which the Greek meaning of this word is "good man". Evander is a friendly and gentle cat which we suspect enabled his abuser to achieve this unspeakable act.
During Evander's initial week of recovery, he sustained a drop in red blood cells suggesting possible internal bleeding. Upon ultrasound, it was determined that no internal bleeding existed, however, a blood transfusion to “kick start” the immune system would be necessary. Once we learned no internal bleeding had occurred we knew the cat was going to fight and we needed to give him the chance to overcome this horrific deed he was subjected to. Unfortunately, this lead to two bills totaling two-thousand six hundred and twenty nine dollars at the emergency vet which is neither budgeted nor expected and there could be more expenses in the future.
We are aware that we cannot save every animal and at times make the necessary choice to euthanize some animals when the quality of life becomes an issue. In this case, we truly believe Evander cannot just survive but thrive with a little bit of love. So if you can donate to assist us with his bills we greatly appreciate anything you can provide to Empower Evander in this fight to overcome the injustice so cruelly inflicted upon him.
