Kathy is going to be saving lives
Kathy is a living organ donor in a paired kidney exchange possibly saving multiple lives. Please help out her cause.
-Kathy’s Story –
My journey to living kidney donation began in the fall of 2013 when my nephew’s best friend (Justin) needed a kidney. We went through the testing process and found we were a match. A few weeks prior to surgery; Justin suffered a major set-back; rendering him unable to receive a kidney transplant.
Fast forward to 2016; Justin made a remarkable recovery and was healthy enough for transplant surgery. Two weeks prior to our transplant date; The Cleveland Clinic presented Justin an opportunity to receive a kidney (that day) from someone who was being removed from life support. I am happy to report that Justin is doing great! A few days later; I was asked by my Kidney donation Coordinator would I be interested in being an altruistic donor; I told her “yes” because I was already prepared to do it for Justin and can’t see any difference in donating to someone I know versus someone that I don’t.
Within an hour of entering my information into the National Kidney Registry database; there were two inquiries about me possibly being a match for someone in NC and MA, other inquiries followed. In early August, I am donating to someone in GA; we are part of a paired kidney exchange where two others will receive a kidney as well. This is a testament to the enormous amount of people in the U.S. who are in need of a kidney transplant.
During the donation and recovery period (approximately six weeks); I will be on an un-paid leave from work. Per my employer, I am not eligible to receive short term disability because this is an “elective” and “voluntary” surgery.
