#ILookLikeAnEngineer Backstory
Engineer Isis Wenger saw a lot of reactions to an ad her company (OneLogin) put up in San Francisco featuring an image of her. She wrote about these reactions in her Medium post, “You May Have Seen My Face On Bart.” As a result, she started the #ILookLikeAnEngineer Twitter hashtag that saw participation from thousands of engineers of all shapes, sizes, colors, genders, ages, and backgrounds.
The Goal of This Campaign
Together, we’d like to put up at least one billboard in San Francisco showing, celebrating, supporting, and encouraging the diversity that was reflected in #ILookLikeAnEngineer posts. This campaign will fund that billboard.

Other Ways to Support #ILookLikeAnEngineer
- Share this campaign with your friends! (You can use the share tools on this page, or here's the link for your convenience: http://igg.me/at/i-look-like-an-engineer.)
- Ask your company to be a corporate sponsor (they can get their logo on our ads).
- Do news stories on the campaign—we're open to answering questions.
- Be supportive of engineers you know that are members of
underrepresented groups. That means listening and giving them fair
chances, equal pay, and perhaps mentoring (if they so desire).
- Volunteer your time and money to help bring more members of underrepresented groups into engineering.
What If We Surpass Our Goal?
If we surpass our billboard goal of $35,000, we’ll be able to have more ads so that we can extend our reach in normalizing underrepresented groups in engineering and inspiring people who may not have thought of becoming engineers to do so. If we significantly surpass that, we’d like to see if we can help with funding organizations that teach programming to underrepresented groups.
Why Flexible Funding?
We chose to use flexible funding in this campaign so that people could
have the option of paying with credit cards. In the case we don't reach
our billboard goal of $35,000, the money will
go towards buying smaller ads.
