So What is Phase 2?
What Do We Need and What Do You Get?
Phase 2 is
rehabbing and preparing the building before we kick-off our kitchen. The
building needs roof work, extensive work on the windows, and replacement doors, just to get it ready to withstand this Winter! We also need immediate
funds for a security system in the building to prevent break-ins and protect
our kitchen equipment, not to mention costs required to turn on the gas,
water, and electricity.
We don’t just
need funding though. We are reaching out to those who may have valuable
rehabbing skills. If you are able to assist with any of the above email us at neighborsbuildingbrightmoor@gmail.com and we will happily work with
you or consult you when we are working on a project in your area of expertise. We are willing to talk about other
perks for those who donate their time, skills, assets, etc.
The Kitchen Now and Our Vision for Its Future
Right now the kitchen building looks like this:
![]()
But, NBB has been able to turn blight into positive and
beautiful change, like this mobile farmstand for the Brightmoor Youth Garden
![]()
and this abandoned home that we turned into the “maphouse,”
a community hub and mini-library
![]()
not to mention, community members have turned countless blighted and
vacant lots into gardens like these:
the lamphere honey garden...
"where the wild things are" community wildflower seed-saving garden
community greenhouse and fruit tree orchard on grayfield
water catchment system at the JVS Love Garden on Dacosta
So imagine what we could do with that vacant kitchen.
We are already envisioning incredible things like a green
roof garden and a planter box patio. But, more than simply how to physically
transform the building, we are setting out to create a genuine community space. We
want to teach neighborhood youth cooking and nutritional classes in our
kitchen, we want to hold our community meetings in the open front space, but
most of all we want room and equipment to make delicious and organic products with locally grown ingredients like:
Nicky's goat cheese
Knucklehead Farm's gooseberry syrup, apple butter and preserves
Sunnyside Farms' hot pickles
and...
Brightmoor's Home Grown Sea Salt Kale Chips!
With your support we are confident that our community's dream can become a reality. You all helped us through Phase 1 and now that we own the building, we know that we can do this. Keep up the love and support!

For Those of You Who Missed Phase 1, Here's A Look Inside...
The Kitchen!
We got a chance to
walk through the future kitchen space and what we saw is incredible! Here's the
front entrance, already furnished with display coolers and registers
![]()
Imagine those displays
filled with Brightmoor-grown fruits and veggies, along with countless teas,
jams, cheeses, breads, or other value-added products all made by community
members!
In the back we found a
ton of commercial kitchen supplies, still in great condition!
Like this washing
station...

and this stove area...
![]()
and this display case...
![]()
and, the big finale...
TWO ENORMOUS WALK-IN COOLERS!
![]()
with all of this
already in place, the community kitchen could get up and running in no time! And
not only could we start a kitchen here but this room will give Neighbors
Building Brightmoor a real office to work out of!

Now we can combine our
organizing, market farming, and community building in one place.
