Overview
Join the National Trust for Historic Preservation, in collaboration with Heineken USA and the Astrodome Conservancy, as we kick off a multi-day festival that will make the Houston Astrodome come alive in a brand-new way. Our vision: an “8th Wonder of the World” that dazzles just as it did decades ago.

It’s time for the Astrodome to lift off once again!

We at the National Trust for Historic Preservation, in collaboration with Heineken USA and the Astrodome Conservancy, are on a mission to show the world how its “8th Wonder” can be reimagined as Houston's next great public space. This multi-day festival will be the launch of the Astrodome's next chapter as a civic space for all of Houston to enjoy. With your support, we’ll be one step closer to ensuring that this icon gets the comeback it deserves.

Opened in 1965 to shield baseball fans from the nagging mosquitoes and oppressive heat of coastal Texas, the Astrodome put Houston on the map as the home of the first domed stadium on the planet. But that wasn’t the only first. In addition to giving the world “Astro Turf,” the Dome was home to the first skybox and the first animated scoreboard. And with the largest indoor space ever created by mankind, it certainly gave credence to the expression that everything is, in fact, bigger in Texas.

The Dome was home to so much more than its MLB namesake, the Houston Astros. Everyone from Evel Knievel and Muhammad Ali to Elvis and the Supremes thrilled packed audiences inside the Astrodome. Bobby Riggs and Billie Jean King competed in the “Battle of the Sexes” tennis match there in 1973, and Nolan Ryan threw one of his seven no-hitters under that awe-inspiring ceiling. And then there was pro football (remember the Oilers?) and years of rowdy livestock shows and rodeos. Simply put, this is where Houston came to play.

Unfortunately, its quirky design and engineering feats weren’t enough to keep the Dome afloat. Over the years, its core tenants gradually peeled away to newer stadiums, including one that was constructed just feet from the Dome itself. And just like that, the soaring structure that shocked the world now sat empty.

The party was over—or so some people thought.

Today, ambitious plans are afoot to bring the legendary landmark back as a vibrant public space. But what exactly does that look like?

The Astrodome Conservancy envisions a multi-day festival that previews the Astrodome’s future use by showcasing innovative public art, exciting sports activities, and one of the Dome's great strengths—live music. In this way, Dome lovers can experience this iconic place in a new light, and a new generation of Houstonians will get the chance to meet the “8th Wonder.”

Success! We're happy to report that our campaign raised $40,060! That's $25,060 above our original goal of $15,000!

Thanks to the generous support of our backers, we will soon show the world that the groundbreaking Astrodome still has plenty of days left and new generations to enjoy it.

Please stay tuned to the updates section of this page for additional project news.

What is the National Trust for Historic Preservation?

The National Trust for Historic Preservation, a privately funded nonprofit organization, works to save America’s historic places. We are the cause that inspires Americans to save the places where history happened. The cause that connects us to our diverse pasts, weaving a multi-cultural nation together. The cause that transforms communities from places where we live into places that we love. As the leading voice for preservation, we are the cause for people saving places.

Our mission is to protect significant places representing our diverse cultural experience by taking direct action and inspiring broad public support.

Where is my donation going?

More than 90% of all funds raised will support the cities' projects and the National Trust’s ongoing work to save historic places in Houston and around the country. Up to 10% will cover Indiegogo costs and processing fees as described in Indiegogo’s Terms and Conditions.

When will I get my perk (non-ticket)?

Perks will be delivered later this summer (July/August).

Can I visit the project site?

Yes! You can drive around, but at the moment you cannot go in. Our goal in resurrecting the 8th Wonder is to invite more visitors inside.

When will the project be complete?

Saving places takes time! But with your generous support, we hope to get the Houston Astrodome project completed as soon as possible.

How do I get support for my project? Or can I submit a project for consideration?

We at the National Trust are always interested in hearing about what is important to you. Although we may not be able to save it immediately, you can always contact your state’s historic preservation office and see how you can get started on the road to preservation!

Is the National Trust involved in other restoration projects?

Yes! We’re the country’s leading advocate for saving historic places. As such, we’re on the ground in communities across the nation. Visit our website to explore other National Treasures like the Astrodome.
