Appeso a un corda, in perenne sospensione sulle pareti di marmo bianco, il tecchiaiolo è l'angelo custode dei cavatori. Opera nelle condizioni più estreme per mettere in sicurezza il fronte roccioso, che sorveglia e ripulisce con ferri antichi: il martello, con cui saggia la tenuta della parete, e il paletto, che utilizza per scalzare massi e placche incombenti sui piazzali di lavorazione.

Nello scenario maestoso delle cave di marmo di Carrara, con i suoi anfiteatri affacciati sul Mar Ligure, il tecchiaiolo (dal toscano 'tecchia', rupe) è l'erede umile e valente di una tradizione arcaica, che oggi come allora usura, indurisce e consuma. Un mestiere dove permane, ineludibile, il quotidiano confronto con il rischio, la fatica e, talvolta, la paura.

Il tecchiaiolo vive un radicamento totale con un territorio sospeso a metà tra le vette e gli abissi. Come un ragno, imbiancato dalla polvere di marmo, resta abbarbicato per ore alla nuda roccia che domina il mare, nella calura estiva come nel gelo dell'inverno. Nella sua professione vi è la fedeltà ai saperi, agli strumenti e ai valori di generazioni forgiate dal sacrificio del lavoro in cava. Vi è la passione per l'alpinismo e la speleologia. Vi è infine la coscienza di una scelta difficile, di un rapporto conflittuale con una montagna che si ama e, al contempo, si è costretti a ferire.

Questo progetto nasce dall'amore dell'autore, giornalista e videomaker, per la propria terra. E' un omaggio agli uomini che abitano questo crocevia - unico al mondo - di paesaggi alpini e marini, e che da centinaia di anni lavorano le sue montagne.

Hanging on a rope, in perpetual suspension on the white marble faces of the Apuan Alps in Tuscany, the tecchiaiolo is the guardian angel of the quarrymen. Literally 'the worker of the tecchia' (the mountain face), he works in the most extreme conditions, cleaning and monitoring the rocky faces with ancient tools: the hammer, to chech the stability of the face, and the iron bar, to edge out boulders and plates impending on the working yards down below.

In the majestic scenery of Carrara marble quarries, natural amphitheaters facing the Ligurian Sea, the tecchiaiolo is the humble and skilful inheritor of an ancient craftmanship. He performs a task that wears out, hardens, consumes. He carries out a profession whose daily confrontation with risk, fatigue, and sometimes fear, is unescapable.

The tecchiaiolo lives fully rooted to a territory suspended between peak and abyss. Just like a spider, whitened by the marble dust, he clings to the naked rock overlooking the sea, both in the summer heat and the winter frost. His job reflects his attachment to the know-hows, the tools and the values of generations of men forged in the sacrifice of stone-working. It reflects the passion for alpine-life and speleology, and reveals a complete devotion to the mountain. A mountain that he loves but in the same time he is obliged to wound.

                                    

This project arises from the author's love for his land. It's a tribute to those men who live in a unique territory, a crossroad of alpine and marine lanscapes. A tribute to those who worked and inhabithed these mountains for hundreds of years.
